Tony Boyer's Book...

I got Boyers book a couple years ago for christmas, I dont shoot bench rest, but it is full of tons of incredibly valuable information like brass prep. Have read it a few times.

Mike Ratigan's book is the best!
My story I've told before about my first shooting lesson with Tony.
Wife and I drove to Mickey Coleman's place for lessons with Tony. Not much wind condition at Mickeys that day so we worked at 200yds. First thing Tony did was to put a chair in front of the bench to the right of my bench. He said that if it was OK, he would observe me while I shot a group. I shot my group with Tony watching me and nothing else. When I went down and pulled my target, Tony had another target that he marked where he said my bullets hit the target. It really wasn't that good of a group and Tony had charted it perfectly just watching my bag handling. I was a bag squeezer at the time. I said, "Tony, how did you know that my first shot was high"? He said I put a small amount of thumb pressure on my grip. Well, how about the one high and to the left? He said thumb pressure and my hand was touching the butt stock and so on. Incredible that he could watch me only and tell how my groups will form. I remember when he told me why he went from being a bag squeezer to a Farley. He said he shot most of a winter looking for a problem he was having. He found his arthritis was not allowing him to squeeze the bag properly. He is very single minded in his pursuit of winning rifle matches.
To many people think it's just making better ammo. They have no idea how bench manners affects groups.

Tony Boyer has forgot more than Ratigan knows.
Just looked it up. Tony has 176 HOF points. Mike Ratigan has 10. Most of us don't have the time or money to do what these guys do.

I liked the story I read where Tony Boyer took his mobile home to Speedy Gonzales home in Texas . Parked it at Speedy's and spent 3 months together sharing info. That's dedication.

I mentioned HOF points info in post #27.

It takes more than money to get into the HOF. Many have tried.

Boyer did not have the kind of money you spoke of. He did have the dedication and the drive. . He worked as a lineman for a power company. He would attend a match, drive whatever it took to get home to get to work the next day. He was not what you'd call well educated. He thought things through and applied that knowledge. He listened, and used info from other shooters as far as barrels, bullets, ect. that were winning. Contrary to what I thought, he was open minded about many things . He lived Benchrest. .. .That's why no one will ever beat his record.

He will always be The Man.

Not responding to the story of 3 months at Speedy's, but I heard they were working together on a video shooting game.

That was not a good time for Tony. Or a lot of others for that matter. On the advice of another well known Benchrest Shooter, Tony got out of there as soon as practical.

There are a lot of us who were around then that know the details first hand.

As for Tony’s book and his approach to Benchrest. Two words……..Common Sense.

That level of dedication to the sport is truly hard to wrap your head around. Followed closely by the dedication of the writers involved to make that book happen, get it to print and to the market. The book business is a brutal thing.

Lots of gold nuggets throughout the book. His tip on checking a sizing die alone is worth the price of the book...simple and common sense. Don't end up on the sidelines wishing you'd got a copy.

Good shootin' :) -Al
