Toasted Barrel at 750 Rounds

Even though my new barrel is due today and the old barrel is off the action I decided to see if I could properly clean it. Started with two wet patches of CLR followed my ten tight brush strokes and then two dry patches. After five cycles no more carbon. Did this same routine twice with Shooters choice and out came the copper. The barrel looks very clean except for one very small patch of copper near the muzzle. To my untrained eye it appears I got the carbon ring also. I have a first bid on this barrel so I don't know whether to put it back together and shoot it or to see what I have or install the new barrel. Please tell me what you think about the bore cleaning.

That barrel looks great after your cleaning! I’d spin it back on the action and shoot some groups. Only way you’ll definitively know if cleanliness was negatively impacting accuracy. A few more rounds won’t decrease its resale value... it is what it is!

If you shoot it again it will let us all see how correct everyone's theories have been, and that would be valuable to us following this thread.

If you don't put it back on and shoot it, you won't ever know if you fixed the problem. The only thing you will know, is that you were able to get the carbon cleaned out. More importantly, none of us will know either - LOL.

I too would like to see the results of shooting it. I also would.like to see a picture of the throat of that barrel and the begining of the lands.

If you are happy with the price offered then i would sell it and leave all of us wondering?

Nice job of cleaning it Frank. The bit of copper at the muzzle can be taken care of with a little more work if you are so inclined to do so. CLR with definitely soften hard carbon up. I polish my leade/ throat area about every 300 rounds in my barrels. That barrel should go back to shooting.

The previous set of pictures showed what some described as fire cracking. This now appears to be removed. Is that because the cracking was in a layer of carbon rather than barrel steel?

After cleaning it this morning I decided to put it back together tomorrow and go shoot. Then I unboxed the new barrel this afternoon. Oh my! What a difference. Changed my mind again. After reading all the request here to shoot it, I think I will shoot the old barrel again.

I'm shooting my first Criterion 6br barrel from NSS. It's a 1-7.5 twist 28" LV. It's a shooter.

One thing i've learned is never, ever look down a Savage barrel with a borescope!

And guys, i'm trying to buy a barrel here!!
Knock it off with the "shoot it"!!!

Oh well, higher round count means i can offer less, right?

Well the old barrel is back on the action, in the stock, scope mounted etc. I fired two test rounds in my crawl space and the base to datum line measures the same as the rounds from my last range session. I have rounds loaded and ready to go in the morning if the wind will cooperate.

Here are the range results and photos after. The conditions were go. Slight switching breeze with a little mirage. Fired three sighters followed by my best load. 107 SMK over 30.2 Varget with 450s. I seated the bullet -.015. First three shots looked to be in the .2 something. Decided to do two more. When I measured this the last two opened it to .528". Next two three shot groups were 30 grs. Varget. They went .625 and .565. Next two three shot groups were 29.7 H4895. They went .556 and a whopping 1.060". All these loads were good when the barrel was new. Total rounds fired was 21. Check out the photos of yesterday's shinny clean barrel vs. these after 21 rounds down the tube. .
