To Rebore or Not to Rebore

I have some old shot out barrels and wondering if it's worth it to rebore them to another caliber. Anyone got experience in that area and, if it were your build, who would you select to do the rebore?

I used them once and am about to send them another .243 to bore out to .264. The first one shoots just like any other custom barrel since that is what they are doing. If you send them a good custom barrel to begin with it is easier to make another good barrel. They can do factory barrels but since none of those are stress relieved and most are hammer forged I do not think the results would be nearly as successful.
Cut Rifle barreling in Arizona is another option but I can never seem to get ahold of Dan to talk to him (too busy making barrels!).

I am curious. Why would you rebore an old barrel instead of buying a new barrel. I understand if you have an "Old Betsy" with a worn out barrel that you want to maintain as "Old Betsy" but still want it to shoot well. Is the cost of reboring significantly cheaper than a new barrel?

From the price shopping I've done it looks like I could save at least $100, perhaps $200, by reboring an old worn out barrel. One of the barrels I have in mind to rebore is a 1" diameter stainless steel that's 27" long. It still shoots, sort of, but isn't as good as it once was. Haven't made the decision yet but am collecting ideas from those guys who've been through the process before.

To rebore a 30-06 out to 338 is $200 everything included. It does not have to be rechambered but there will be a counterbore at the muzzle around 1'' deep. From the exterior the rifle will look exactly the same as before except for the counterbore.
A new barrel job would be $500 to 600$

Jim Dubell at Clearwater does an excellent job of reboring. He cut rifles his barrels. The real deal is if you have a custom barrel that has custom sights, octagon barrels , and other features makes it very cost effective.

You should probably stick a throating reamer in there, other wise you'll have a chamber without any throat!

A good point that wasn't mentioned. I had mine rechambered by Jim when he rebored mine.

Well let's say you want a barrel re-chambered and made to fit another action can Delta handle this type of work?

I don't know much on the subject but my grandpa used to say
"that's dumber than reboring a barrel"

I think it's a bad idea, not knowing anything about it though.

For what it's worth, GP did used to say that.

I have a JES rebore (Savage 99 308 rebored to 358, and about half the price of Clearwater). It shoots fine but the ruf milling picks up A LOT of copper...that's ok for a hunter that only gets about 10 shots/year between sight-in and practice and purpose.

When I mentionned 'everything included' it included the throat cut and some bore lapping.

I wouldn't be interested in sending a barrel out of the country for such a small savings as I'd probably do the chamber work myself, anyway. I know Jim and Dans work (Clearwater Reboring and Classic Barrel and Gun Works) and am always quit pleased with it (either shops work).
