To break or not to break

that is the question.

Going to get a 700SA trued and rebarreled, it's currently a 20" varmint taper .308 and in a short HS-Precision stock, I think Rem calls it the LTR. The little thing has been great to take coyote hunting over the winter, being light and short but the chamber on it is an oversized sloppy mess, good job Remmy, and I'm going to 6br it. I've got a varmint taper 1-14 6br barrel from another 700 that I'm going to use, I also have a brake from a varmint taper 6mm that I'm contemplating using. Problem is, I want to keep the rifle shortish and a handyish (new word there). I'm thinking of cutting 2-4 inches off the end of the barrel to have the brake installed and still maintain a shorter length.

Now, I've got brakes on most things but have never shot a light 6mm (1-14, 55-70g bullets) with a break and I'm wondering is it even worth it to put one one. The only reason I'm thinking of installing it is to calm it down where I could stay in the scope a wee bit better and catch the whole show.

So I'm wondering, is it worth breaking a 6br 1-14 varmint taper or not.

Depends on how you'll be using the gun. My 6BR is 23-1/2" long, plus brake, 14" twist with heavier contour than a Rem. varmint. It's used off bags for colony varmints with 55-65gr bullets. Even with light bullets a 6BR has plenty enough muzzle rise to where braking makes a nice difference in how much you see when the scope is cranked way up. It's a lot more fun when you can watch the whole show. A brake is definitely worth having on one of these guns.

For what it's worth, I even brake my 22BR's..
I like to watch the complete show, and they allow that to happen...

Yes. Even .223/223AI's that are used off bags. They go bang and just sit there, don't even move. It's a pleasure to use these guns, like shooting a heavy 22rimfire. Makes it possible to use lots of scope.

My only comment would be that you're really not going to like shooting it w/o hearing protection. Possibly not the best answer for a truck gun, but that's personal preference. You can always screw it off and put on a thread protector.

Read the original post again. Most of his guns are braked......he knows what's what.
