TL Technologies Action

Got my TL Technologies action today from mr. Jack Lyons. This is my first custom action since my Stiller Predator (which I regretfully sold) in 2010.

I have full blue printed Remington 700s with PTG bolts so that’s my base line for comparison.

First, Mr. Lyons communication, price, payment options, shipping, and overall transaction was great. The pictures below are everything I got, including shipping, for $750.00! Overall transaction took 4 weeks, from order, to payment, to receiving.

Second, the action is nice. I would say it falls right in its price point. Nicer than a trued up Remington but not as nice as say a defiance (have experience with them with my buddies custom rifles). The bolt is smooth to operate, but is a little more difficult to open then a Remington. I’m assuming because it’s a control round feed action. The threading looks very nice and clean. And the action is very solid. I need figure out how to weigh it. There were complaints about the engraving from other members, but I think the issue was fixed bc mine looks really good.

I got the “tactical” bolt handle and it looks very good. It’s threaded so I can easily change it if need be. Every looks clean. The action face, timing, recoil lug, bolt face all look clean and well machined. I don’t have the tools to measure though. Just my initial impression. The bolt fluting is very, very well done. It’s three, light, spiral flutes down the bolt. I really like the look. The timney trigger breaks at a clean 2.5lbs, too.

For the bad, the recoil lug is “pinned.” It’s not really. It’s like a center marking to line up the recoil lug. You can actually just wiggle it out by hand. I got mine ceracoated by mr. Lyons. The finish is nice. It’s a good looking paint job, but I’m not sure if because of shipping it got beat up a little? There are wear spots on some of the high points. Maybe it was mr. Lyons doing some test fitting?? Lastly the rail is well done, and fitted nicely to the receiver, but the screws holding it down stick out! I lost four slots for mounting options for my scope.

The real test will be once I get it built. This will be a 300WSM build on a LA. It’s going to be a walking varminter, hunter, long range rifle. The action is in the Rem 700 stock that I’m using for the build and it fits perfectly.

Overall, for first impressions, I’m pleased. I got a lot for $750. It’s going to be a pretty Rifle once I’m done.

Good information, thanks for sharing!

I’m a bit surprised that the scope rail is that long, but especially that the screws are not countersunk?? Makes no sense and you lose a lot of mounting options but that is an easy fix.

The recoil lug pin is a non issue once the barrel is on. Keeping the lug square while tightening the barrel is the hardest part.

Keep us posted on how it turns out and especially how it shoots and functions!!

Best of luck!!

Interesting that the bolt release is still on the trigger while it also has a side bolt release. I have one on order in short action. Really looking forward to it.

As for the action opening being a little bit more difficult than a remington, I don't see how the CRF could impact that, however, a likely cause is that it's 100% cock on open instead a little of both due to being timed.

@Prose. I just caught that! Lol. Yeah the bolt release on the trigger doesn’t work. I was just tinkering with it. I’ll have my smith remove it when he does the build.

Just an allen screw to remove. Unscrew it and you can pretty much say you smithed it yourself ;)

300-whisper I just finished a build on one of these actions, Make sure your smith understands that the counter bore for the bolt nose will need to be opened up to about .760"

I chambered the barrel in 28nosler and the extractor would not cam over the rim of the case, I had the counter bore at .740" as per Mr Lyons and the extractor was hitting the counter bore and not opening up to let the case head under it. Does that make sense?

Here is the rifle all done up

@Danny1788 thats a gorgeous rifle. How does it shoot? How does it function?

I’ll tell my smith about the .760 cut. Thanks a lot for the info.

Thank you I built it for my brother. I used an ultramag BDL box and it only holds two down in the mag due to the thicker follower but it cycles really well. Havent worked up a load for it yet, just breaking the barrel in with some 180 hybrids. But got some 195's and RL33 to test in it.

Is your rifle ceracoated? How did you get that nice stainless look to it? It’s only available in chromoly correct?
