Titanium action, who makes the best

My Pierce weighs 6 1/4 lbs with a 27" Douglas barrel and a 3x9 Zeiss. Mine has a custom Brown Precision kevlar stock. Melonite the bolt and it's slick as owl shi*t.

280AI before Melonite.

Butch,

That is certainly a beauty you have there! Very nice.

bolt "binding" I had the same problem with a stainless DEFIANCE Defiant s/a + there was a gritty sound when the bolt was worked which after multiple polishing efforts and no interest form the manufacturer or gun builder to help....

From the Defiance website:

The Defiance Guarantee
If you don’t like it, we’ll change it, swap it, or refund your money. We want all of our customers to be 100% satisfied with the quality of our product. We’ll even pay the return shipping.

Guaranteed.

Defiance has always been receptive to my calls and e-mails, except for the week before SHOT Show.;) But everyone is busy right before SHOT Show.

Had you contacted them with a viable complaint about the feel or operation of one of their actions, they would have responded as usual, send it in for a check up. I'm sure we're not getting the entire story here.;)

+2.... I highly doubt it too. Norm always took care of me with anything I needed.

No doubt Borden makes a fine action. I own defiance machine actions
and they are top notch never an issue and smooth as silk. I would look hard at Smith
if I found that on a defiance.

For an easy ultra-light, pick up a Howa Mini in 7.62x39 or 6.5 grendel and rebarrel it with a light contour in 22 Grendel. 5.5lbs with factory Tupperware stock and will shoot 53gr Vmax at over 3500fps. Makes a great carry rifle for varmints with a very respectable factory trigger.

If you only want info on Ti actions, I have a Pierce LA Mag in 300 Win that made a nice rifle, but as Butch mentioned, something has to be done for coatings as it’s sticky as is. I coated mine with microslick, but it needs something better so I’ll have to send the bolt out for melonite or DLC.

Just a thought but the Kimber Montana weighs only 6.08 pounds with Talley mounts and a Leupold scope on top.

This is a short action.

But I would guess building a rifle this light would be very doable.

I’d personally buy an action your comfortable with, any good “hunting” custom action and then use a light barrel and a very light stock along with lightweight mounts and scope.

I would think building a rig just under 7 pounds loaded with ammo should be doable with a lot of the good actions out there.

Butch, and chance you can repost these pics?

Super nice rifle. Thank you for sharing. I'm contemplating a very light rifle setup in a yet to be determined small-mid capacity cartridge (under 40gr capacity). For hunting and 'because why not' mostly.

Sounds good! I should have made mine in a different caliber. It wasn't pleasant on the bench, but was OK hunting with it.

I year or so ago, I had two customers getting ready for an elk hunt. They wanted 6 pound rifles in 300 WSM. I priced them out and mentioned recoil might be a tad harsh. Not sure what they ended up with.

Well, There are better ways than a lightweight rifle.

If I was looking now, I’d look at Mack Bros lightweight steel action…it’s lighter than their titanium action by 2 oz. After seeing Butch’s build I also ordered a Ti action from Pierce and built a lightweight 300 Win mag, 26” fluted #3 Brux and a McM standard sporter stock. It’s around 7lbs with a 2-10 Leica scope and a very handy rifle for western hunts. And like Butch’s, it’s very lively at the bench! Just fine for hunting though.

Man, 7lbs with that setup. I always thought my rifles were like 8lb rifles and nothing spectacular with the components regarding weight savings. I think I was happily over optimistic. Remind me to never find out the real weight! However, I guess it's not been a problem for me if they are a 10lb rig.

Now, that being said, I still want to put together a super light build with a 20 inch barrel and a low recoil cartridge. Maybe suppressed if that can be worked out. I just need to decide if I really want to drop a few $k on a rifle I'll hunt with 3-5 days a year when I have a cabinet full of others that are just as fun to take out for a spin.

I went with an ADL trigger guard, blind mag and shooting 200gr Sierra Gamekings (because…old school..). No brake (same reason). It’s a kicker.

Don't matter how many you have in the safe. I just build another!
