Tire Balance Machine for Bullets

Terry

Gold $$ Contributor
We spin tires to balance them. It would be nice to have a machine to spin bullets to sort out the ones that are out of balance.

Any usable ideas?

Harold Vaughn presented a design for a bullet spinner in Rifle Accuracy Facts, if i remember correctly.

Hmm, if only we could catch the bullets unharmed. Then we could just shoot-sort them...

shoot turned solids & don't look back!

spin balancing a projectile to 200-300 thousand rpm's isn't going to happen in your lifetime.

I am pretty sure Terry shoots 600 and 1000 yard BR. I have seen many different kinds and brands of turned bullets shot and none of them has come close to what is needed to win in BR.

The was a post here maybe a couple years ago that was linked to a video on this very topic. The OP had a homemade machine with a small rotating cylindrical bullet holder that was powered by compressed air. In the video, he would drop a bullet into it and the balanced/concentric bullets would stand straight up as they spun, the bad ones would not. Sorry, don't have the link or remember the title of the post, but you might be able to find it via searching "spin balancing bullets" or something similar.

Yup...

I built the air chamber just for chits and giggles a few years ago. The bullets will definitely spin. Didn't have access to an oscilliscope so I never finished the project.

Hmm in the automotive world in the last 3 years there is a new device/ oscilloscope called peco scope, it can interface into a lap top and can give 3d readouts down to mili gs, cant imagine the price of balancing already good bullets would be a wise investment?
