Tipton Carbon Fibre rods problem

I have dozens of fishing rods. Most are graphite, or a mixture of graphite and E-glass and graphite and S-gless. Many of them are nicked, have caught numerous 300+ pound Yellowfin Tuna, along with big Mako and Thresher sharks. Not one has failed, and I have never seen a failure while using one. Abuse, or fail to use something correctly, and it is likely to end in failure. Be sure to never buy a modern vehicle that contains carbon fiber panels (many do). You don't want to be impaled do to nicks on the panels:rolleyes:

Inquiring minds want to know how the professor classifies what differentiates a material to be called carbon fiber vs. graphite?

The difference comes down to which side of the pond we live on. Carbon fibers and graphite fibers are the same thing. On this side of the pond, the fishing industry in the U.S. uses the word graphite. In other countries, the word carbon fiber is used. Carbon fiber is a polymer which is a form of graphite. Graphite is a form of pure carbon. Carbon fiber sounds high-tech. Look at the graphite golf club shafts. Those shafts are woven from carbon fiber. They seem to hold up pretty well;) Tennis rackets, ski poles, skis, snowboards, brakes and rotors, knife handles, grips for handguns, bow limbs, etc; etc; etc.

Counterclockwise, or, anticlockwise. Same thing. Petrol, or, gasoline. PE, Braid, Spectra, Dyneema. All the same thing with a different name. I use Izor Line Spectra, exclusively.

Just dont buy these rods. They may not abrade a barrel but theyre junk and dangerous

People Are Dangerous Dusty (Some, Not All) - I work in the offshore oil & gas industry & I've seen guys who could destroy an "anvil" in a matter of moments.

I don't think that Carbon Fiber rods are the best, and I'm not doubting anyone's post. - I believe that over half the problems are induced by "people".

Exactly correct sir.

I been using them for 4 yrs but I use the correct size jag and patch and have no problems, but I started using Isso & JB so my cleaning has changed for the better

I just jumped in here to see if I was one of the only people with a Tipton Cleaning rod problems.
I just broke a rod cleaning my 6 br nothing to hard to push .Never beat on it ,had it flex a bit a couple of times .
I own three of them and I will not be replacing my 6 mil rod because when it broke it just about drove it self down into my for arm and that I don’t need .
As for the warranty mine is about 15 months old ,so that is out .It will be on to the Dewey rods from here on out .

Graphite and carbon fibers are all carbon but the way it is processed can make it as soft as pencil "lead" or as hard as a diamond.

The raw carbon fiber I have dealt with was soft enough to be fairly easy to cut with scissors. The unidirectional was a pain in the ass to cut but only because there is almost nothing holding it together before you saturate it with epoxy resin.

I have a few Tipton rods and I like them.

They have a Max Force with a handle that can slide along the length and then grab. This let's you apply pressure very close to the bore guide instead of all the way at the end of the rod. This let's you avoid the flex which should keep it from snapping.

I have dealt with shattered carbon fiber. It can be nasty but with care, one of the .22 cal rods should be pretty durable.

I'm going to stick with them.

Wow this thread started in 2010, got brought back up in 17 and now again in 19 !
INTERESTING !
If like my fishing rods if it gets scored around its circumference that is a weak spot.
Thanks to this thread I'll not get a carbon cleaning rod.
I did according a .17dewey with a stuck patch & screwed up the bearings of another kind un sticking it by pulling really hard.
Treat your rods like you need/love em !
