Tipton Carbon Fiber Rods

I was about to purchase a Tipton carbon fiber rod, but then noticed Made in China on the label. After contact with the manufacturer, I learn these rods have been made in China for more than a year.

Has the quality declined since the move, and would I be better off with a coated Dewey?

RAM,

I have three carbon fiber rods, a Hoppe's, a Gunslick and a China made Tipton. The Tipton quality looks as good as the other two and it has been functioning well. I will not use anything other than a carbon fiber rod on my guns. I have used coated (the coating wears off) and stainless. Hope is info helps you.

Been using the Dewey coated rods for many years and never had a problem with the coating wearing off. Of course I use a bore guide. However I've been told that rods under .224 caliber are indeed a problem with the coating wearing thin since the rod diameter is smaller making it difficult to apply sufficient coating. Sinclair recommends stainless rods in these smaller calibers.

P.S. Local world class custom rifle maker recommends nothing but Dewey coated rods for cleaning his rifles and all the benchrest shooters I see on the range use them also.

There have been instances where carbon fiber rods have snapped and badly damaged the users hand. I personally know one such person. There was even one instance noted in a Midway review of their Tipton rods. It's an especially scary thought if you ever seen the end of a snapped carbon shaft. Never had a single problem with Dewey's, but I use the properly sized combination of rod diameter, jag size, and patch material to get the proper fit to the bore ( also the proper brush size)...........and of course the properly fitted bore guide, and a rod caddy to protect during transport..........coating remains intact on all, even though some are over 15 years old.

I have used Tipton rods for a dozen years, now have four, and never a problem of any kind. If someone has snapped a Tipton rod cleaning his rifle, his cleaning etiquette needs serious improvement.

Actually, if you have a good, close-fitting bore guide and use common sense in your cleaning regimen, any rod will work. If you force a rod, any rod of any material, it will bend and contact the bore and that is not a good thing. If you wrestle a rod bad enough to break a carbon-fiber rod, then don't wonder why your barrel doesn't shoot.

Some years back I had a Tipton .17 cal rod snap on me. About 2" in front of the handle. Just a couple of weeks old.
My cleaning etiquette may not be up to BR standards. I've been known to pull the bronze brush right back through the crown :D
No idea why it snapped but Thankfully I was'nt pushing hard or it would have impaled me quite nicely.
Left me wondering if somewhere in its life it received a sharp impact in that area that caused an invisible fracture.
I would imagine its a rare occurence.

Dewey is manufactured in Ct. USA.

One of the easiest ways to wear the coating off a Dewey rod is clean a .204 bore with a .20 cal rod and a .17 cal jag.
No need to ask me how I know this ::)
I've had the new rod and correct jag for roughly eight years now and no coating has disappeared. Will miracles never cease? ;D

I have been using a Tipton carbon composite rod for a couple of years now and have not had any problems (22 cal). I DO treat it with respect and inspect it regularly.
Good quality rods are a good investment but the country of manufacture might not be a clear indication of quality.
There are many opinions out there but we are not all cleaning the same barrel with the same chemicals using the same techniques. Consider me a gentle hand with brushing and patching but I still want the stiffest rod of the largest diameter that works in the bore. Bare stainless in a cro-moly barrel and coated (Dewey) in stainless barrels give me more peace of mind. The carbon rod is the longest and sees service when the others are too short.

Dewey does Reconize that they have/had a ISSUE with the 17 Cal rods. A few years back I had two,one for brush one for patch and they BOTH wore the coating off at the brush/jag end.
I called them and they sent me TWO rods NO CHARGE and did not ask for the rods to be returned.

I can not say if this is still a issue withthe current rods.
I have two new TIPTON rods that are still in the case as I have read soooo much about them. The PARKER HALE rod was IMO far superior to any rod made.

Butch, I waisted time, money and a lot of good barrels with coated and carbon rods. I guess you learn in 50 years of loading and shooting......jim
