Tinnitus sucks

I went to a VSO. Did the paper work, got a hearing test done. It seems I have hearing loss and tinnitus. I get $120 a month lol.. The only reason I went is because if a cure is found I am sure the government will notify me for treatment. I have had it for 20 plus years. Went I get dehydrated it seems to get louder. Like Alex, I shall not give up coffee...

45 years of ringing in both ears related to service connected duties. VA does not have or use any solid fixes, many hearing aids over that time. Nothing we have done rids the ringing. Sometimes it seems it stops, but it does not. Use aids in each ear also.

Negative on that as I'm way over that percentage. Disability pay is rated on your rank also.

I’m pretty sure they changed the rating system in 2008. Or somewhere in that time frame. I have it in both ears and 20% hearing loss and I only got 10%. Also my rating isn’t based on rank. So I guess it did change.

My tinnitus is so bad that people sitting close to me in church complain about it.

I'm pretty much used to it, but I would like to hear a chord change from time to time.

Got to be careful when picking an alarm clock. If the tone matches the ringing in my ears, i won't wake up.

Sometimes I try telling my wife that I can't hear her over the ringing in my ears. I don't think she believes it, and it hasn't helped our marriage.

NO, it's not related to your rank. I retired from the Fed and I know. It is only related to the loss.

Well we are down a rabbit hole and it’s my fault. It can be tied to rank if you’re medically retired. The military does a MEB and has the VA give the rating since they aren’t bias. Then you’re medically retired at your rank and get you ratings worth of your base pay. So like a CPT medically retired at 50% would get $3k a month, roughly. If you get out like normal and just go through the VA then it’s not based on rank but the pay table.

I’m 31 and from this thread I need supplements and hearing aids.:eek:

I apologize as I should of stated above I was medically retired service connected injuries, so my ratings/pay are different than others.
The ears never stop ringing, but subside now & then.
Wish there was a cure, but there is not

This actually works for me, when I get it right. But it's just a brief break, so I hardly every do it because it makes me more aware of the tinnitus when I comes back. It doesn't last long, but it is interesting.

What makes it even worse for me is that another IDIOT toasted my left ear by firing a suppressor with the muzzle less than 3 feet away. I wasn't aware it was going to happen, because the IDIOT, who was seated above me on an elevated seat shot down 3 times at an armadillo while I was driving. Did I mention that the guy is an IDIOT and I've not been around him since. Funny how you can get up one day and everything is great until surprise, some IDIOT comes along and changes the rest of your life.

I can relate, my brother touched off a 14" barreled AR with no suppressor 3' from my left ear..... never saw it coming. And no, it wasn't a live target situation, just out plinking.

Someone thought it was really funny 20 years ago.

This thread isn't helping the test tone in my ears one bit. :)

My right ear has tinnitus as the result of some dumb a**ed kid pulling the trigger on a Barrett M82 about ten feet from me after a cease fire was called and had removed my ear muffs. That was over fifteen years ago. Just recently, I helped a friend load some 350 Legend, and his right eye is glass so he has right side vision. I was standing on his right side when he fired his AR blasting my right ear which now rings even louder as a result.

I have to try sleep with a loud fan or the tinnitus will keep me awake. I have found that cleaning the wax buildup in my ears helps too reduce the volume of the ringing hiss. Having clean ear drums lets in more ambient noise drowning out the tinnitus somewhat. I use hydrogen peroxide to clean my ears of wax.

^Unfortunately tinnitus is so common the VA can only give 10% for it which is $120 a month.

I have applied for a disability with a Veteran's Service Officer (VSO). The VA will pay 10% for tinnitus. They do not pay anything for hearing loss AFAIK. You can test for hearing loss. There is no test for tinnitus, so they kind of have to take your word for it.

One other thing, I went out of my County to a VSO in another county who was known to do a good job for Vets. Specifically, he got a Disability for my brother. It was an hour and a half drive for me, one way, but I believe in the end, it will be worth it. You only have to see the VSO once. The VSO's are County employees. Not all county employees are created equal.

Sometimes, If you need hearing aids and wear them, tinnitus reduces in amplitude and can even be swamped out by soft sounds being amplified and compete with tinnitus.
I, too, have tinnitus but it doesn't bother me. But, my hearing aids do reduce the amplitude.

Years of running saws and sanders inside my shop, never thinking of the damage it could cause, I can hear it almost all day every day if I have nothing going on, Then suddenly I don't notice !! until it comes back that's when I realized that it's distraction that is the only relief I have found, My first muzzle break I believe is what finished me off though, Kind of to late but I now wear those goofy looking extra large muffs, I will take the odd looks at the range, Cant afford any more loss, or any louder ringing mine is more like a squeal, sounds like my ex nagging me guess it was" till death do us part"

>30 years with a squeal of ~4500Hz at 90dB. I've read articles that say people go insane after relatively short times suffering from constant tinnitus. I'm weird but not insane. What it amounts to for me day to day is that any sound over 4500Hz is effectively opaque to me. This is its own special problem since I can't hear those sounds even at very high volume so I occasionally end up accumulating additional damage by being exposed to them without knowing. I'm also prone to accumulating additional damage because what might seem painfully loud to some people does not always seem so to me. I have to decide in advance if there's liable to be loud stuff and then equip myself with plugs or muffs or both as indicated since often by the time I can hear a sound it's already harming my hearing even further.

Hearing loss is the only disability that people get mad at you for having.

My hearing is still good but I was listening to the ringing last night while trying to go to sleep... Sometimes it's alot worse than others...

These are the kinda things most people don't think about and end up later in life with hearing damage.... It doesn't take a Cannon to make it happen especially over long periods of time... The world is a loud place.... I had my hearing checked a few years ago , first time since I was in school.... I was having vertigo problems and went to a specialist.... The ringing was very bad when I took the test but they said you have very very good hearing above average.... You must have never been around anything loud.... I said nothing but 45 years of shooting , alky motors , chain saws etc... I now use ear plugs when riding the lawn mower and it makes the job a whole lot less tiresome...

I work at a gun range part time and now have invested in peltor 300 hearing protection so I can hear when pulling skeet for the guys... So far I like them , I got tired of pulling my plugs in and out all day... After seeing the amount of older people out there that can't hear and it's mostly military related I would imagine , I now take hearing protection alot more seriously than ever before...
