Tinnitus sucks

From what I've read, it is liken to phantom pain for an amputee.
Yes. The only "treatment" I have heard of is hearing aids that play random fractal tones to try to re-program the brain to stop generating the "phantom noise" that is no longer being heard due to damage. I am in Colorado and there is a chain that advertises the treatment of tinnitus. I have the hearing aids and use the tones. Hard to say if it helps, but I do think my ringing is a little less noticeable and certainly is not getting worse.
I'm sure if there was some sure fire cure for tinnitus I'm sure it'd be well known. Interestingly, as I have an affinity for the sciences and keep an eye for the latest things, I saw a report relating to CRISPR (the new and effective gene editing technology) that looks like it may help sometime in the near future where it'll helps grow back the Cilia in the Cochlea, which is where we loose our hearing from sound damage (I've got moderate hearing loss and loud tinnitus). Unfortunately for me, I'm at an age where there's not much time left . . . so I doubt I'll be around if or when this technology proves to work for this. It's pretty exciting technology for the future though.

Addendum: Here is their web site is https://www.soundrelief.com/.

I control my aids with a phone app and there's a feature where I can play various "random fractal tones" or other natural sounds (like the sound of rain or ocean waves, for example). Whenever I play to tones, it does reduce the the perception of the tinnitus tone into the background where it's sometime almost not noticeable. But almost any sound does that for me, whether I'm streaming the sound from a movies on TV to my hearing aids or listening to music, etc. When it's real quiet in a room or wherever, that's when the tinnitus tone of mine sounds irritatingly loud (though I've learned to ignore the tinnitus, like when I go to bed).

I was told that it wasn't gunfire or necessarily loud noises that caused mine. The Dr. asked what I did for a living. I was an automotive machinist for 16 years, and the constant high pitched whine of the various machines is the culprit. None of them were really loud and sure didn't seem to warrant hearing protection at the time, but that constant, relentless high pitched noise took it's toll.
It's true, there is nothing you can do to make it go away...but there is two hookers in Matamouros that I guarantee will make you forget all about it for a while!!!!! I love Mexico!!!!

I have tinnitus but not constantly. It ranges from time when I don't notice it to times I think the smoke detector is going off.
My hearing aids help some.
I had a guy that worked for me once who's tinnitus was so bad he couldn't hear a bomb go off. He also had vertigo and would go from seemingly perfectly fine to falling down tossing his cookies in the blink of an eye.
He was a forward spotter in an Artillery division in Vietnam.

Ear protection did not work for me. Co worker 50' away from me using an air hammer many times a day. I had ear protection on always. I often noticed when he was hammering, the corner of my jaw seamed to tingle and was uncomfortable.

Well the uncomfortable feeling in my jaw was the sound striking it and causing hearing damage. Now my left ear, the one that was facing him is 85% deaf. Tinnitus in both ears.

If I had a nickel for every time I have to say WHAT or HUH I would be a millionaire.

Amen to THAT.

If it rings, don't answer.

I have tinnitus--probably more from rock and roll than 22LR. When I think about it, then it is very loud. When I ignore it, I don't notice it--for days at a time. the key is to ignore it and be confident that you can. It really doesn't bother me at all.

Hearing aids definitely help. My life and the lives of the rest of my family did improve. Jet engines did me in. Nice to hear birds chirping again.

You have to ignore it. I used to only hear it in a quiet room, now I hear it over almost everything. I dont notice it until I think about it. I really noticed it getting worse on the line at the range. I used to really be ringing and beat up after calling the line at matches. I bought a really good pair of ear muffs and that helped a lot. But the concussion goes into your sinus also so I think it is un avoidable to some extent.

Tapering off on caffeine seems to help slightly but since it’s my only vice left I figure what the hell have a cup and as you say ignore the ringing, at my age I am who I am.

That's interesting. They turned me down, and I was on the 81 mm Mortars in Korea in '52. No ear protection of course. Some will tell you....Get hearing aids ! My response ? To make the ringing LOUDER ? !!

my grandpa was in Korea. He was marine corps supply embedded with an infantry company. He got frost bite really bad on his feet and he was disapproved by the VA as well. He had to get his feet looked at once a month for entire life by a doctor. I’m sorry that happened to you. Now soldiers get yelled at by their drill instructors and get va ratings for PTSD as a result.:rolleyes:

I guess I'll be ringing in the New Year with the rest of you.

I've had tinnitus for decades. Machine noise, aircraft engines and flying, Rock n' Roll music, and a bad whiplash injury when in my 20's.

My tinnitus gets much louder when my blood sugar gets low, or if I push on the side of my head and resist with neck muscles, or push down on the top of my head. No doctor can explain why that happens.

I am fortunate NOT to have tinnitus but I do have about 80 dbA hearing loss, probably from several of the aforementioned causes other than military, I'm a 4-F'er. I use some highline hearing aids and try to keep abreast of hearing aid technology so I'll have some idea what I want to go for next time I need new aids. There seems to be a lot more research effort into tinnitus therapy these days so maybe something really effective will come along soon. I would advise anyone with the problem to try and keep abreast of the technology and keep in touch with your audiologist for things coming along. Just using my imagination, I wonder if hypnotherapy would be of any benefit with tinnitus. After all, tinnitus is sort of a mind game thing. Has anybody tried that or checked into it?

Vietnam tanker, Hearing loss with tinnitus to boot. You might want to talk to what we called VSO's (veterans service officers) Like DVA, State run VA etc... They know the ins and outs better than most.
