Tikka actions

Does anyone know if you can buy an action or are we stuck buying the whole gun?

From my limited exploration I have never found actions only for sale.

I just bought a Tikka 300 Win mag for $500 from Eurooptic. That's purty cheap. I wonder what just an action would cost. Prolly not much less.

Every once in a while I will see an action for sale on a forum but it is from a rifle used as a donor and never got built. I could never find a source for an action. I had 2 built from donor rifles, the last done by a fellow Alex Wheeler. If you find a source at a reasonable price, that will be like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Thanks. Even still, its a good deal. 500-600 for and action, trigger, and mag parts. They are such sweet platforms to build light hunting rifles on. Ideal for the saum/wsm.

As far as I know...and I'm the one who would know...you'll have to buy a donor, and go from there. This is what I do.

Where did you get the recoil lugs?

I designed them, and had them CNC machined and surface ground to precise measurements.

I order them 5 at a time as I build my customs.

I just brought the rifle (T3x stainless light), played within untill I could afford to build it up and replace what I wanted. Not ideal but I was able to get some experience playing with and shooting the calibre until funds were in place.

that looks really good. I'm sure it shoots well, I'm actually thinking of doing another little tikka they are great actions to play with.

I think it was in 2015 that Tikka was running a deal with a rebate. I bought a rifle from Cabelas and sold everything but the action and barrel and got a rebate. I think I ended up with $200.00 in the action. Great action with a nice trigger. I put some aftermarket springs in the trigger to lighten it up. It shoots.

A fellow just contacted me wanting to buy one of mine. He said the fit on the one he had bought from PTG was so bad he spent a considerable amount of time machining it to match the contours of the receiver.

Most of the Tikka actions that I have worked with have different amounts of metal thickness on all sides of the barrel threads....002"-.008". It's probably very hard to machine the barrel hole absolutely perfectly centered. The slabbed action compounds the problem.

The secret to getting the lugs mated properly to the action is to make the lugs OD .002" undersized, then cut the barrel shank .002" smaller than that. This way, the entire set up will step down. Perhaps not noticeably to the eye, but you should be able to feel it with your finger. You don't want the OD of the recoil lug sticking outside of the receiver.
