Tikka 1-8 22-250

I just put this barrel on yesterday. I have 75gr eldm bullets, what powder do you recommend? I ran h4350 at 35gr and was only at 2950 fps. I have some loads from 39 to 41.5 of rl26 loaded up to test. Curious what everyone is having success with. I am hoping to get to 3300+ . Barrel is factory length 22.4".

I’m not by my reloading data, I’ll check when I get home. I bought a Tikka 22-250, shooting 80 grain Bergers with a Leupold Mark5 2-10 all summer, it’s a very capable combo, loads of fun no pun intended. You’d be surprised how far that combo connects. I’m using VV powder, just can’t remember which one, either N150 or N160.

When I was shooting an 8” twist 22-250, I got my best results from R15 with 75gr Amaxes. Nothing else was even close. Clocked in the high 3100s and routinely grouped in the .3s to .4s for five shots at 100 and sub .5 MOA at 700+. Give R15 a try.

Thanks guys, I ran powder tests today and got over 3200 with rl15 with no pressure signs and over 3325 with rl26. I will load more up later and shoot groups to see how it does with both. The barrel stays much cooler with rl26 but the powder is up the neck before I vibrate it down a little. It sure is fun!

Can you post results of the groups you shot? I bought a Tikka 1/8 and am in the process of getting all reloading components together to shoot when the weather allows.

I’m still shooting some 77 grain Sierra TMKs out of mine. They averaged 3151 fps on a cool 45 degree day using IMR 4064. Killed a big doe and blew a big hole in a fox this past fall.

what contour?

I played with 75eld’s in my 9 twist 22-250 bergara which doesn’t seem to be able to stabilize those bullets as the target had quite a bit of random patterns on it so I can’t comment on accuracy - but I can share a powder ladder velocity test if it helps any.

Loaded to 2.485 which is about 20 thou off touch in my rifle. Staball 6.5 powder and Federal 210M primer out of RP brass
38 - 3198fps
38.2 - 3236fps
38.4 - 3222fps
38.6 - 3288fps
38.8 - 3275fps
39 - 3330fps
39.2 - 3349fps

39 grains and up were showing primers pretty flattened but no ejector marks. It picked up a lot of speed and appears the pressure ramped up quickly at that point.

What barrel length?

I would carry on with 4350, but would also try N555 and Staball 6.5 - remembering that they are double-based powders.

If this is a factory Tikka barrel, I have some load recommendations that will get you close as mine is a factory Tikka 1-8 .22-250. Components used are the following:

- Lapua brass
- CCI 200
- Speer 75 gr Gold Dot
- 35.8 gr RL-16 (37.0 gr produced 3,242 fps but had heavy bolt lift)
- 2.485 OAL / 2.097 BTO
3,126 fps / ES: 7 (72 degrees that day)

- Lapua brass
- CCI 200
- Hornady 75 gr AMAX
- 32.9 gr RL-15
- 2.620 OAL / 2.089 BTO
3,055 fps / ES: 18 (70 degrees that day)

As always, work up to these loads as they may not be safe in your gun!

I would second this. I know the OP wanted 3300+ velocity but I think that is going to be difficult on that factory barrel.
In some of my development and observations between H4350 and Staball 6.5 - Staball will definitely get you to a higher velocity before seeing pressure signs on the brass. However, the window where everything comes together accuracy/ES/SD is much narrower than H4350.
