Tight Primer Pockets

6MMBR with new Lapua brass. I'm using a RCBS APS Hand Priming tool. Loading Federal GM205M small rifle primers. This is a two handed experience. It does get better after the third reloading. I use a Sinclair primer pocket uniformer but it does not remove very much material, mostly on the bottom outside edge) and no difference in the seating. Also tried using a RCBS Chamfer tool to just break the edge of the pocket, with a little difference but not much. I'm thinking of trying a primer pocket swage that I have used on military brass. This rolls the edge of the crimp rather than cutting it off. Before I attack and ruin some brass I thought I would ask for some opinions and ideas. New guy with weak hands, Hopefully not a mind to match.

I got the same tight pocket situation as you are experiencing and I use the Sinclair with a power driver and it helps after each firing, but yes it takes two thumb pressure to seat with a Lee priming tool.I don't consider this a problem as far as accuracy. But I make sure they all bottom out in the pocket.

Caver,

Tight pockets are a GOOD thing. I too have an APS hand tool and if my hands start to get painful I'll put on a thin pair of leather gloves. I'll get the primer seated with a one-hand grip, then close my left over the right for the final seating.

I've recently set-up an RCBS APS bench-priming tool. It has a big, long handle with lots of leverage. It will seat primers with very little effort. Too early to tell if there is any accuracy advantage with the hand tool. But I know Jerry Tierney uses the APS bench tool and he won last year's NBRSA Nat'ls and shoots with the USA Palma team.

This is a good thing. My Mom always said to look ashamed with a sore wrist. It's nice to see I am not alone. I'll check out some CCI primers as I heard good things about the BR4's and Magnum's. It will be a good excuse to shoot some more groups. As if I need a excuse.
