NORMA brass. Tight primer pockets

TheOtherZilla

Pull my finger
Just bought a new 22-250 over the fourth. Also picked up some NORMA brass on sale.. I ran the brass through the sizer, etc. When I tried to install primers [FED 210M] it took a lot of pressure. 4-5 just would not set all the way in. Yes I used a primer pocket uniformer. I have never had this issue. Any thoughts?

I was using a Lee primer tool. Used em for years

I have experienced the same thing from new Norma brass and also new Nosler (made by Norma). Started using the K&M primer pocket uniformer several years ago and it really helped cut out the radius at the bottom of primer pocket. That's where the problem lies. My older rcbs and lyman uniformer just wouldn't get it. Another advantage to the K&M is the tool head is wider than most and insures a straighter cut on the pocket. On new brass, you have to go in and out several times until there is no resistance. Hope this helps your situation.

Its the primer size. Try CCI's and you'll most likely find they seat easier. Been there, done that. And for whatever it's worth, I also discovered that Norma Brass doesn't hold pressure as well as Lapua. I was testing a few weeks ago and loaded for my new 260 Remington BR and started blowing primers using Norma Brass (something I haven't done in years). When using the same load (same grs and lot) using Lapua Brass, no pressure or blown primers.

Hahaha!! Yup!! You'll be wondering how they'll stay in after the 3rd.

I runned into the same problem with Lapua brass/fed primer with the Lee tool. I now only use the Lee tool for the big 3 brass and pistol brass.
I bought the rcbs bench mounted priming tool for lapua brass.(my main type of brass). Much more strength and a lot more easier to seat my primer.

Ive got some 7mm RUM brass that you can push the primers in with your fingers, wanta trade?

Alex,
Sounds like you may have a big difference in case volume between the two brand's. Just a thought.

No doubt Paul! But this was the first time I'd noted such an "extreme" difference in that I have used and tested Norma brass before when running comparison tests in a .308BR. BTW, the Norma brass used (in blowing primers) was originally .308 brass necked down to a .260. Not something I would do again. Just a lesson learned not only about brass, but taking brass and necking up or down AND NOT further testing the modified brass for potential weakness(s) or strengths.
