Tight Neck or No-Turn Neck 6x47 Lapua

Hey all, I am currently in the process of getting ready to build a new varmint rifle. I am still trying to decide between the 6BR and the 6x47L. If I go with the 6x47L, should I go with a Tight Neck or a No-Turn Neck 6x47L. If I go with a Tight Neck 6x47L, should I go with a .270 Neck or a .269 Neck? I have time before I have to decide on cartridge. However, I would like to make the decision soon, so I can start ordering the Dies, Brass, ect. I was dead set on the 6BR, but I keep reading how well the 6x47L is working. Man, this is a tough decision, but I need to make the right one. All your help would be appreciated, thanks.

Personally, if I were going to have only one 6mm varmint rifle, it'd be the 6BR.

Currently, I have only two rifles that are set up for no-turn necks: a 6BR and an AR-15. When my 6BR barrel is shot out,may take a while, however), I'll have the reamer reground to a .269" neck or thereabouts. I haven't seen any Lapua brass lately that was very consistent.

I built myself a couple of 6x47Ls using a .273" no-turn neck reamer. I'd go with the .273" neck again, as it's a good match with the Forster/Bonanza BR FL sizer die.

But for a varmint rifle, I think I'd go with a std. 6BR instead of the 6x47. Recoil is noticably lighter with a BR in rifles of equal weight, and BR barrel life is bound to be better. While the 6x47 is an accurate cartridge, I really believe the BR has the edge there.

I will be using a brake on the rifle and the rifle will weigh around 15 pounds, so I am not real worried about recoil. The one thing that seems to be consistent with everyone I talk to about the 6BR, is brass quality and accuracy. I believe barrel life will be excellent with either one, with the edge going to the 6BR. This is going to be a hard choice, because I know the 6x47L has close to all the same qualities as the 6BR. Maybe, I should just go with a no-turn neck 6x47L and see how it works. If I don't like it, I can re-chamber my 28" barrel to 6BR. However, I would like to get it right the first time. I know, stick with the 6BR it's a sure thing. I look forward to hearing more opinions.

I own both calibers plus a 6.5x47, I have two 6br's one is a 8tw the other a 12tw. My 6x47L and a 6.5x47 are both 8tw. If one them had to go it would be the 6x47. These are PD field rifles all set up the same, the idea being grab anyone of my rifles and there's no difference in feel, very close in weight all trued s/a 700's, same stock, 20moa Badger bases, all have Jewell triggers set at 12oz, a little boring but a big helps in consistency. Believe me there's a big difference in recoil, the two 6br's don't have brakes the 6x47 and 6.5x47 both do. I can positively feel the recoil difference after firing 250 plus rounds at the end of the day. I shoot free recoil and the 6br's don't knock me off the scope so there's also less eye strain.
I also would suggest going with no turn necks in high volume shooting varmint rifles.

I'll second RJ's comments on recoil - the difference in recoil between my Dashers & 6x47s is easy to notice, even in 14.25lb. prone rifles, with both rifles shooting 105s - Dasher at 3000, and 6x47 at 3080fps. I'm not about to claim that it's enough to bother me, but I shoot mid & LR prone with a heavy coat, and our matches are only 20rds. + sighters. Neither cartridge bothers me over the course of a full day of shooting, as in a 4x600. But for varmint hunting, where you're going to be shooting steadily as long as there are dogs up, I can see where the std. BR would be nicer.

All Lapua brass benefits from turning if for no other reason than to clean-up and uniform the neck wall. I am a fan of .270 necked chambers. Not so agressive that you having to make multiple passes with the trimmer, yet deep enough to completely uniform the neck and have tight clearance.
