Thurro clean every time?

I have used it three times in a row after my full normal cleaning regime .
First time was kind of experimental , to see what it would do . It did improve the over-all performance , "On Target" .
The second time ; I got a little more aggressive , using twice as many strokes , and a second application of paste on the Brush .
The third time , I noticed that the area the first six to eight inches of the barrel was still not coming as clean as I wanted , so I started "short-stroking" that area , and increased the over-all number of strokes on the entire barrel .
Before starting with the Thorro-Clean , the Barrel had about 1,800 rounds , and my scores were gradually dropping two or three points a relay , and my X-count was going South .
Went from consistent 197 /198 and 9 to 12 X's , down to 193 / 194 with 5 or 6 X's .

The last five relays have been :
197 -6x
198 -10x
198 - 9x
198 - 8x
I'll get to shoot two more times this week , and have four more strings for more info , but at this point , I think it might be a , use the Thorro-Clean every other fifty rounds and see how it goes .
I shoot at Ben Avery ; so for those of you who have shot here , you know this is not a easy Range to shoot at . Tens are winners , and X's are X-TRA !

For what its worth I use patch out and accelerator which gets almost everything out except for some faint carbon streaks. If you want it super clean use thorroclean every time, the bore scope will tell you. I try not to use JB bore paste unless the carbon ring is so stubborn.

For those of you using Thurroclean, do you use it every time you clean? Or is it too aggressive for that? Thanks
ONLY if you want a clean barrel, I'm not talking about after every 25 round string in SR BR, but after the match is complete I do my normal clean (like I do after each match relay) and when I get home I bore scope and then Thoroughclean, If you look with your bore scope that is all the convincing you'll need. I know someone will come here with "you'll wear out your barrel!! In SRBR I want to win, clean barrels win. So I only get 2200 rounds instead of 2500? So, I probably competed at a higher level than with a dirty barrel, one of my guns (2 weeks ago) shot 63, 66, 63, 66, it is one of the barrels that had not been cleaned as well, that is being remedied now!

Every barrel throat is going to lengthen after firing. This article below states that a Dasher will lengthen .004 per 100 rounds, my measurements after three barrels show this to be fairly accurate, IMO depending on the powder and load used.

As far as cleaning goes, I used Thorro-clean for a while thinking that it was the answer to end all, I just hated the black goo that it created. Getting that out was a pain, and used way too many patches. So, after much research and testing, I have settled for BoreTech Eliminator as a powder solvent, followed by Patch-out with its Accelerator. Once I hit about 200 rounds fired, Flitz’s Bore Cleaner takes out the carbon throughout the barrel. Flitz’s on a nylon Iosso brush works without wrapping patches over brushes, etc.

BTW, my Dasher barrels have had an accurate life of just over 2500 rounds fired.

For my 223 barrels that see 40%+ 'rapid fire' shots 10 shots in 60-70 seconds], they erode 2-3 thousandths/100 rounds.
They eroded 2-3 thousandths before I started using an abrasive every cleaning and after I started using an abrasive at each cleaning.

I dont think some of you are following what I said. I said to find touch on a clean barrel, before you use your abrasive. Then find it again after you use your abrasive. If your moving the touch point every time you clean your barrel, on top of its natural erosion your shortening your barrels accuracy life. Not by a little either. Maintaining a sharp throat is important when your after 0 and 1s. Thats why a set back restores accuracy, the throat is sharp again, its not because you cut out bad rifling. So use your brushes and solvents until they no longer get the carbon out. Then use your abrasive, and keep it in front of the lead. The lead is not where the carbon builds up so dont pull the patch back that far every stroke. Just work the area with the carbon.

Can I ask what application are you referring to?
He is referring to the Across the Course Service Rifle Competiton, likely a 20" AR derived Service Rifle or a Match Rifle. Hope that helps. about 88 rounds (incl sighters) for a full course 80 shot match. with timed fire rapid stages as 200-300 yds, 20 on your feet at 200 and 20 more at 600 (full course) or a reduced distance match.
