Threading away from shoulder

I'm waiting for someone who has read this thread , that has a lathe with a threaded spindle, to try threading with the spindle in reverse and away from the shoulder!

If it has a threaded spindle with no way to positively lock it in, why does it have a motor reverse in the first place?

That is the way many 'smaller' lathes (think 13" swing or smaller) were made in the past. Many were/are 3 phase and controlled with a drum switch. There was an old 13 x 48 South Bend that I repaired the taper attachment on so I could use it, while I was in gunsmithing school. I'd have loved to have that machine,,,,,,, long head stock and all! Safety wasn't "built it", it required that not so common today, common sense. That is way running in reverse is 'taboo' to us old school guys. The only reason to reverse was to back out a tap, and then you'd have best used a 'snap' to torque the chuck to the spindle.
