Threading a bolt knob on a mill

I am looking for some advice on threading a bolt knob for Remington 700 on a mill. I would do this in the mill but a Remington 700 long action bolt doesmt fit in the lathe. I have a holding fixture already. What cutters would you recommend for the knob removal? Annular cutter? What size would leave a 5/16 shank for threading.

Thanks
Nick

Thanks guys. I love this site. It gives me excuses to buy tools. I have a Criterion boring head on the way. A boring head has been on my needed tools list for a while.

Thanks
Nick

for more tools and to make this set up easier for threading an acorn die will thread quick and easy

I actually have a geometric threading head. I got it for a steal at an auction and have yet to use it. I just have to order the correct chasers for it and I should be all set

Thanks again
Nick

I milled & bored out aluminum split collets to hold M700 & Howa bolts in the mill vise, then bought Hougen annular cutter #17122, which is a cobalt roto-loc 11/16" x 3/4" DOC cutter. It leaves a 5/16" shank, which I thread with a die while the bolt's still held in the aluminum collet. I suppose you could indicate the bolt handle in to get it nearly perfectly vertical, but I just use a small machinist square & eyeball it.

Yes, I can see using an annular cutter on a bolt with the handle silver soldered on (like a M700's) could cause the solder joint to fail. Haven't tried it on a M700 bolt yet, but since Howa's are a one-piece forging, that's not an issue with them. I've done only one Howa bolt since machining the collets & getting the cutter, and it worked like a charm.

Dennis,

With a good fixture you should have no problem. Vibration is just a matter of the right rpm and feed rate. My fixture puts absolutely no pressure on the bolt body, handle joint. Good luck.;)
