Thread and Chamber Question

Ok let me start off by saying I am not a machinist. I am a CNC Technician. I work on and keep up probably 70 CNC mills and lathes. I have wanted to do my own barrel work for years and don't know anyone locally that does it. So I am going to ask. I have a lathe in my shop at work. I understand cutting threads and have done this many times. My questions are how do you know how long to cut the threads? When you use a reamer how do you know when you are deep enough? I know these may be complicated questions I am just tired of wondering how to do it. Any info or articles you could point me too would be great. I have a general idea on how it is done, but do not know if I am correct. I deal with tight tolerances everyday on these machines. I know I am capable of doing it. Just don't know how to start. Thanks for any input you may have.

there are others out there as well. Darryl Holland has a few as well
Good luck.

Gre-Tan also has a darn nice video that would be a great help.
I have the Franklin video and it's a dandy too......
These videos will show you what to measure to get the dimensions you need to do a top notch job.......

Newlon Precision used to have diagrams of tenon and thread specs for most all rifle actions.

Some of the older Gunsmithing books, such as Dunlap, had diagrams with specs also.

These days I WILL NOT thread a barrel with out having the action in my hand to measure to. To darn many ways to screw up as it is with out taking someone else's word as to the size it needed to be cut to....
Custom actions are one thing, Remintons are a whole new ball game.......

Belton45 you can rent all these machining and gunsmithing videos at smartflix.com check it out. They got Darryl,Gordy and Richard.

Here's a link to a page on my web site.Article on Rebarreling It's how I do it. There are no particular "right" methods of chambering barrels. There are definitely wrong ways to go about it. Read the article, view the video's mentioned. The main thing is to understand why things are done the way that they are, then use what works for you whether it's my method, their methods or a combination of all of them.
