Thoughts on savages new bolt pistol

Savage apparently is releasing a bolt pistol based on a model 110. I am thinking about replacing my slug gun with this when I hunt near home. 6.5 cm and 308 are two options that interested me. 10” barrel if I remember correctly. Just how much recoil can I expect? What else should I know about hunting with this type of handgun? I don’t even know what I dont know about shooting a handgun like this, but it looks really interesting and I hate slugs with a passion

Barrel is too short..Get it out to 15". I like the left bolt for right hand shooters though. I wish Rem had done this with their XP's.
You should be able to get a pre-fit I would think, barrel length would be gold in that aplication

Yes you could get another barrel ,but that's another $300-400 bucks. Cartridges in the 6.5mm-7mm range will get it done to 300 yds and that's about all I'd push it (for Me). They have lessor recoil yet good ballistics. Get a good tripod.. I use the Bog-Pod. Get a good blind set-up (off-hand shooting is another ballgame).

Make sure your state allows handgun hunting with any caliber.
Some are restrictive to straight walled cases or a .357 bore and larger

Doesn't look like they did much research with dedicated handgun hunters or longrange handgun competitors to see how either group configures their guns. It really doesn't fit into either category to be right for the job. Saying that, I shoot Savages in both rifle and handgun configurations for our local 1000 yard matches and really like them. Shame to have to make changes to the gun when they could offer options or different models.

Something like would be handy in a back pack when I’m snowmobiling. What velocity would you get out of 10 or 15 inch barrels?

The older Strikers are another option. Mid grip, piller bedded, 15" barrel. 223, 243, 708, 308, 300 wsm.
Stock trigger sucks but can be adjusted to a decent hunting trigger. Holds 2-3 rounds.
$400-500 for the base models.

Sent you a PM.

Don't discount the TC platforms and the XP as well

Only thing I don't think I would like at all is that honking mag hanging down. And I'd want 14 inches of barrel.

But I still think the Savage would be fine for popping Mr. Deer.

Next big decision...long eye relief or rifle scope????

i have to agree on the barrel being to short. The action set up is the correct way to go for a right hand shooter. If it is legal in your state to hunt with it on whitetail, It will extend your range. The 10" will limit it's range. 6.5 Creed should be in the 2100 to 2200 range with a lighter bullet. Handgun scopes are critical on eye relief, and if you never shot one, I would recommend it before you spend the money. A brake would help, but it is very loud on something that short. I shot a 15" 7mm-08 and recoil was not that bad.

If you add a muzzle brake, the concussion will mask other issues, except for reduced velocity.
However, I do have some mostly deaf shooting friends who swear by brakes, so to each their own.
The main problem with the too short barrel is that the majority of rifle cans
are not rated for such short barrels, and those built to take it (Surge, etc.),
are also unavoidably on the large and heavy side.
An extra 4" of barrel length would have me ordering one of those new Savage pistols today,
Also a more flush fitting 5 rd magazine.
I run 14-15" barrels on my braced 6.5 and .308 Strikers, and they work very well with most cans.

I think the idea is for guys to use braces and suppressors to get around having a SBR. Not really to have a specialty pistol. Personally I like the XP-100
This is exactly the demographic that they are targeting. There is a niche group who want this and will go after it. I'm just not sure that it's a big enough market to sustain a large company like Savage for any length of time. This makes a super nice setup though for deep concealment or in the backcountry scenario, strapped to your pack with a brace and can on the end. It's certainly not intended for long range prairie doggin' ; ) There are companies out there who specifically take your already registered long gun and convert to a pistol and have you reregister it to do what savage is offering from the factory. It is nice to see a company listening to their consumers these days : )
