Thoughts on a "Shorty" 6BR

I have a HV 1/14" twist 6mm barrel that's just laying around collecting dust. I was thinking of clambering it in 6BR. Finished length would be 16.5". Any thoughts on the performance? I'm thinking of running the 70gr SMK's due to I have several thousand of them from my old PPC and don't use them in anything else. Has anyone else tried a short 6BR? Thanks

Built one on a rear grip SP platform. 16", 1-8 twist. Deadly accurate but wild recoil. Too much to be fun shooting. Still a hoot to shoot. 5 shot groups at less than 1/2" were the norm. ;)

I'm gonna have to give it a try. Sounds like fun! I'm gonna be mainly shooting the 70gr SMK's. How far can I expect to reach out with it??

I'm sure it will be very effective on varmints at those ranges.

You might ask some guys with Quick Load to input data for a 16" barrel to look for a fast burning powder to work well in the short barrel

Lighter bullets and shorty barrel may work better with N133, H322 LT32 maybe benchmark

Times like this I wish I had quick load it would be interesting to see what it says

There is nothing wrong with a short barrel 6mmBR. I have a H-S Precision Varmint Pistol in 6mmBR with a 15" barrel that I use when calling coyotes. I have been loading 70gr Nosler BTips with XBR 8208 at 3000fps or 55gr B-Tips at 3300fps with XMR 2015 and it works very well out to 300yds or so. Have taken deer with the 70gr B Tips also.

I'm just saying that 16" is the breakpoint between a rifle and a pistol.

What Greg is saying is the barrel (finished length) better be 16"+ or it turns into a SBR (short barreled rifle) and you'll end up dealing with the BATF boys. :o
If it is registered as a 'pistol", it can be any barrel length you want. ;)

Exactly. Registered as a pistol, no worries. Registered as a rifle, < 16" barrel = great potential for hassle.

And, if you build on a "rifle" action, with the 16"+ barrel length, it's still a rifle, no matter what it looks like. 8)

This 6BR just sold on this site without the Leupold 6.5 X 20.
Need a scope for your project?

Lightheart shoot me a PM with the specs and price of the scope. I chambered the barrel so now I'm hunting for a nice stock. I think I'm just gonna use a Boyds Pro Varmint. The finished length is 16.5" so no hassle from anyone. Can't wait to see how she shoots

Let me get this straight..... If you were to use an xp100 action and put a 14" barrel.... All you would have to do is register it as a pistol even if it had a rifle type stock bolted to the action???
