Thorroclean, this stuff works!

After watching Fclass John’s video I decided to try Thorroclean.

Thorroclean worked well on my first rifle so I tried it on a second one. This barrel has about 400 rounds on it and never been cleaned. the results speak for themselves!

That’s good feedback, how long did you have to work on the barrel to get it to that level of cleanliness ?

So I followed instructions, one patch of thorroflush then put the Thorroclean on an Iosso brush, this was a 6mm barrel and I used a 6mm brush.

First pass I did 20 strokes, then a patch of thorroflush and checked. Wanted it a bit more clean so back to the brush for another 30 strokes and that’s where I stopped.

The number of strokes vs what they say on the bottle (15) is acceptable to me since this rifle has never been cleaned and has been sitting since 2017. I like the patch out for general cleaning still but on my other rifle using patch out/accelerator I had run 100+ strokes with no improvement, while Thorroclean cleaned it right up. However, Thorroclean is an abrasive.

I had the same good results you had on a few older barrels. Just read and follow it's directions. Took about 15-20 minutes per barrel. WD

Thanks, John noted the use of an oversized brush that I had not tried to this point with any cleaner, I suppose I’ve been nervous to get a brush lodged into the bore however I’m going to give that a try as well.

The Iosso brushes work quite well.

Depending on how stubborn my barrel is being I will use a 6 mm in my 223, I will also use a 30 and jam it in there to break up the carbon ring and I’ve never had an issue getting it lodged.

I used the 6mm for mine because the 30cal was not needed and I didn’t have a 6.5 brush. But when I was cleaning the throat area with the 30 cal brush it was a snug fit but it would definitely go down the barrel

I use the next size larger brush, for 6mm use 6.5 and for 6.5 use .284
for 30 cal. use a 338
Never had a problem with it.

The advantage of the correct size of nylon brush, for this application is that you can reverse it within the bore. With a bore scope you can know where the hard carbon is, and stroke within that area.

As Boyd said, with an oversized brush it's very difficult to reverse direction
in bore.
So pick what's going to work for you.

I had been using Thoroclean with an oversize Iosso brush according to the instructions and was not blown away with the results. After seeing F-Class John's video and and upping the brush strokes to 30 before checking and repeating as my borescope showed I am now a believer. Thanks John.

Exactly the same for me. you have to do more strokes than the bottle says. Johns video made me try it again, I recharged the brush after each 10, my barrel has 3k rounds on it and had some hard carbon deposits that i could not get out and i ended up with 60 strokes total looking after each 20. like new. I have cleaned with shooters choice then JB for 20 years, then got a bore scope, switched to bore tech and JB, better, but never got the results that thoroclean gives me now. I leave the bottle lay on its side, the stuff does settle and takes quite a bit of shaking to get it all fluid again. I know John puts a couple nuts in the bottle to help break it up.

After a little experimenting I do a slight variation from the factory instructions for Thorroclean. For 6mm, I wrap a 1 3/8" square patch around a black (older style, not the hardest) 6mm nylon brush, and apply the Thorroclean to the patch. Making the coating even with my finger tip. I find that this combination gives me the pressure on the bore that I want and while it takes a little effort, is not a problem reversing it in the bore. This keeps most of the Thorroclean in the patch, in contact with the bore. I do follow the instructions about running a patch of Thorroflush down the barrel before starting with the Thorroclean. With the patch on the brush, if you get it very far out at the muzzle the patch will ball up and you will end up taking the brush off to be able to pull the rod back so I take particular care not to poke the brush out at the muzzle. I do all of this after a regular cleaning with patches and a bronze brush, so there is really no powder fouling or hard carbon near the muzzle. The Thorroclean wants to run off of a patch so I have learned to open the flip up and with no pressure on the bottle let the patch be wet by capilary action. Experience has taught me when to stop to avoid drips. While the Thorroclean does an excellent job, it tends to be a bit hard on my skin so if I am going to use those products, I put on some black, 6 mil mechanics gloves, that I reuse.
