Thinking thankful

Sometimes in the morning when i first wake up, it's like my mind thinks really really clear for a moment. And i always seem to be thinking about mom or dad. Lost both of them around 2014-2105.

but when I open my gun safe and pull out the very first rifle my dad gave me, Win Model 70 in 308, or my first 22lr, a Marlin 39A, or my first shotgun, Rem 1100 LT-20. All i can do is thank God i had parents that taught me responsible gun owner ship and how to shoot.

So so thankful my dad took the time to teach me to shoot.

And i must thank the late Bob Jourdan for introducing me to precision reloading.

I encourage anyone that is able, introduce a youngster to this wonderful world of shooting and reloading. It's worth every second spent.

I believe nearly all of us here will agree with you and have similar sentiments. I too have my first rifle, m67A Winchester and pistol a Mark 1 Ruger. When I shoot them they provide a strong connection with my dad who has been gone for 11yrs.

My papaw (great-grandfather) had me set up shooting his .22 when I was around 6 or 7. He had a 12 ga. that had been given to him by his uncle, somewhere in the 19-teens. I asked him if I could shoot it, and he agreed. Set up a can, walked back a bit and he handed it to me. He stepped back to the side, told me to pull the stock into my shoulder good, put the front bead on the can & squeeze. I clearly remember that shotgun roaring & punching me, and me running into something solid right behind me. He had stepped in behind me while I was steadying, already expecting the outcome .

I miss him terribly, but I don't have to miss his shotgun. It hangs right above the doorway of my den nowadays, and still gets used on occasion.

I also had the same experience with my father. 22 and 12ga i remember it like it was yesterday and it was about 47 years ago....

This post started me thinking, I lost my dad when I was 12 so I didn't have the chance to do many of the things written about here. BUT 2 men outside my family took the time to take me hunting, teach me gun safety, and jack me up when I needed it. So kudos to all you dads teaching yours and other kids to shoot, It could mean more than you know.
I now get the opportunity to shoot with my son and his adult friends weekly during waterfowl season.

I wish i had my first gun back. It was a winchester single shot 16ga my step dad bought me and took me hunting with. That gun was so natural for me to shoot i rarely missed.

My 17 yr-old texted me last nite about 10PM...... "don't think I'll be running sound at church in the morning, Trev's got a bull down and it's a ways back in....."

7:00 this morning here's one pack dropped......


Yeahh, it's a lot of work but the payoff is awesome

It's nice to know where your kids are!



Oohhhhh, and my 10 yr-old shot his first 500yd group yesterday!



Yeahh, I'm a THANKFUL guy too......

My parents and extended family.

I was blessed to grow up in a world where hunting and fishing just WERE.... I still don't even much think about it as evidenced by this selfish post. My Mom didn't even hunt (much) but she was THERE, lissening to the same stories and supporting the same values ALWAYS. And cooking anything we brought home. Snapping turtle? Yumm. Beaver tail? Muskrat? Eelpout?.......Pacific Giant White night crawler? (One of my dad's buddies tried to gross her out, she cooked it and made him eat it...)

And Dad? I know it sounds trite but "if I can be half the man!"

ANYWAYS......this is to acknowledge that I KNOW where mine comes from... God, Parents and Country

Both parents are long gone as is my older brother but the memories of them will be with me forever.

Our loved ones goodness lives on thru us.
My father is with me. All those little things he gently demonstrated. And some more firmly. My thanks every day.
His mid 50s 222 Remington did not come on this trip but the experience it gave me has served well yesterday and today.
