Thinking of upgrading my caliper

I have two of these and they are worth it IMO. Solar is the way to go. No batteries to replace or leak. Easy to read display to 0.0000

Do you do a lot of reloading outside?

Wow, my mind is racing with smart as# responses. Solar works with ANY light source not just the sun...grandpa. ;)

lol, yep. I was just being a smart-a$$... :-)

Next up, a wind-powered case trimmer. ;)

You know, I bet a dippy-bird could be modded to anneal cases:

Oh, a smart-donkey AND a comedian. And here I was worried about your feelings and trying to be (uncharacteristically) nice. Well I got your number now. :-)

I like your annealer concept but you will need to make sure it continues to function in earthquake areas and if the wind is too strong, it might miss a beat or three and your cases could get overcooked.

(Now, I have a headache.)

These B & S are good. The comment about the cheap Starrett's is correct. They are cheap Chinese.

Brown & Sharpe 00590090 Digital Calipers

Google them on Amazon. You can get them from Grizzly, Shiraz's place, for about $80.00.

I paid like 200.00 for them when they were offered by our tool guy.He ordered them and I opened up and found the imfamous sticker and if you look real close it is a direct copy at harbour freight.

Just keep the Frankford Arsenal one you have now, your eyes are getting bad then the mind starts to go and then next you will be forgetting where you put the calipers.

What you should be asking is who makes the cheapest braille calipers that come with a cord to hang around your neck.......

Now that's just mean.

And funny.

I had no intention of getting rid of the FA. I'm going to use it for unimportant measurements. You know, just like the town which, after purchasing a new fire truck kept its old fire engine to go to the false alarms.

Denny, I was in the same position you are in about four months ago.
This is what I bought:
http://www.zorotools.com/g/00061122/k-G3120205/

They are very nice, smooth, and accurate. They also have a large LCD display.
It was a little painful to spend $200.00 for the first one, but after I received it, I ordered two more to replace all the others I had.
I see they are $158.59 right now, that's a smoking deal!

i think the additional cost is the coolant/oil proof...
not required in most application...

I am somewhat amused by the feeling of precision that many seem to get from being able to read a digital caliper to a half thousandth. My dial calipers can easily be read between the marks, and their batteries do not fail, because they have none. Also, I think that some think that their calipers are somehow good enough to do work that would be better done by a mic. that reads to .0001. I have name calipers, and cheap calipers, and several different micrometers, and check them against each other from time to time. I guess that I have been lucky, but my cheap ones (this is not to say all cheap ones) seem to work as well as the more expensive. I know that this is not a popular notion, and for constant work in a shop it may not be true, but for my gun related stuff, it is.

I don't think any micrometer is considered accurate beyond +- 0.0001" no matter what it cost or how many digits it displays. All micrometers are considered inaccurate unless they are verified with standards at least once a year. Why would you need accuracy beyond 0.0001".

not so...
spend some money, work in a controlled enviroment...

go look up mitutoyo 395-741-30
0.00005"
and
193-111
.001mm

for the average reloader probably 0.001 is fine which means a caliper or a 0-1 mic
for ammo crafter/better br shooter 0.0001 which means both quality calipers and mic's
just my opinion......
i own several dial/digital 6" calipers and probably 4 mic's in the 1" range...
but i also own a lathe..

I'm retired, have chronologically gifted eyesight and getting forgetful, so I was laughing at both of us. BUT having high dollar equipment can have its down side, I have a furry "weasel" that enjoys playing with MY toys. I went to the bathroom and came back to my loading bench and my "weasel" was batting at my "under" $30.00 calipers.

She (the "weasel") will take cases and small items off the bench and then run off and play with them. I have to keep my good equipment in cat proof plastic storage containers, and fight with her for my chair.

Across from the reloading bench is a large chest freezer that doubles as a second work surface. If any high dollar items are left on the freezer they are in danger if the wife wants in the freezer.
Sometimes less is more. ;)

And you have to weigh the good with the bad.

My name is not CatShooter :D

Accuracy: The difference between a measurement reading and the true value of that measurement.

Resolution: The smallest change in a measured value that the instrument can detect. Resolution is also known as sensitivity.

Repeatability: The ability to obtain consistent results when measuring the same part with the same measuring instrument.

From the Mitutoyo Website
Resolution Accuracy
395-741-30 0.00005” 0.0001”
193-111 not listed 0.0001” (data from 193-211 the inch version)

Still looks like +- 0.0001" accuracy to me?

A cheaper tool would probably do it. But I like to own nice tools. :)

Ain't that the truth! And I believe that leads to a mental state where suddenly your measuring has improved and hopefully passes on to your shooting skill and printing downrange. That's probably a bunch of nice BS, but oh to feel better about yourself is a great "feel good story." (lol)

I have a 25mm Mitutoyo languishing in a drawer, in like new condition (except the foam in the box has disappeared) that reads to .001 mm. If I have my math right that is .000039" (any offers?)One thing that needs to be mentioned here, is that when measuring things like pressure rings on FB bullets, is is all about technique, and for that matter, any time that you are working to that level it takes a lot of care to get out of a tool what was built into it.

Eric, that model looks a lot like the one I just bought. So tell me again why you need three of these devices? Are you measuring with the three of them and then taking the average, just to be sure?

BTW, are you coming out to shoot this weekend?

I use one caliper for general measuring around reloading bench. The second one I keep my ogive comparator on it for measuring rounds base to ogive after being seated. And the third one I keep with my lathe.

I know I could have used one for the first two operations, but I like to be able to take a quick measurement if I need to and don't want to be fooling around removing/installing my comparator.

I plan on being there Sunday.
