Thinking of doing a 6.5 creedmoor AI.....

I was curious if anyone has tried this. I know it is going to require custom dies. But, my feeling is that it would be a nice little cartridge to drive 140s I am guessing 2900-2960 fps in a 30-32" barrel. Right now, getting around 2850fps in a 26" barrel is typical in a standard 6.5 creedmoor. I would throat it out a bit since it is a long neck and you can seat that bullet out a ways already. Adding the improved shoulder would get me case capacity. Visualizing the cartridge, it would truly look like a big brother dasher.

The other option is to keep the shoulder the same, but throat the chamber really long. In my current tactical setup, I am seating a 140 hybrid to aboyt 2.86" OAL so I can mag feed. it looks like I could seat the bullet out quite a ways in the neck and maybe that might allow me to get to 2950fps.

Any comments on doing this?

To much like work.
You have to blow the case before you really get into it.
Try this.

One stroke of a 260 case and you have a "net shape", case, ready to go, without fireforming.
I have taken mine up to 2950 fps with a 28 incher with no problem.

You should consider a 243 AI

What different's is seen with the 243 Ack Improve vs 243 Improve 30 degrees?? I'm very interested in finding a node with a 6mm around 3,250fps with 105gr... Also with H4350..???

go 7mm creedmore AI and send me the reamer print! I would love to build one to allow bullets to be seated out to meet the lands in a rem model 7, the 7-08 can't be done easily without a super short freebore and the back of the mag slot cannot be extended by machining in the model 7 as the trigger group is too close :-\

I'm very interested in you doing this but prefer you doing a 6mm Creed... I may even provide cases for it to help out... I would like to see what it does...

Wouldn't it be super awsome if we could get Creedmoor Sports interested in producing a 6mm Creedmoore Improved case but contract Lapua to do it with small primer pockets!!! Our endeavor would have paid off with just that case!! If your still interested but in a 6mm Creed let me know.. Maybe we can find some other guys here to throw something in as well because of interest???

What is the rational of this over a 6.5x284? Mag feeding from a short action? If you're putting the same amount of 4350 in the case and driving the same bullet the same speed I expect you'll get the same result, to include Barre life.

One of the problems with the Creed is the soft primer pocket on the brass.. By improving it we maybe able to drop the pressures enough to keep the brass shooting..

IMO, this is bad thinking, you should be thinking 243 AI on lapua brass, or a 6/250 AI(6.5/250 AI) on Lapua brass. Get OFF creed brass in a hurry, it is soft, can't get around it. A creed Ai would loose primer pockets in a hurry.

The Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor brass has never exhibited a "soft primer pocket" problem in any of my Creedmoors. As good a brass as most and better than many that I have used.

Can you get 12 reloads off of it?? Or does your pockets stay tight even when you load up to a charge that puts shiny ejector marks on your brass??

Have gotten 6 reload cycles so far....but I neck size and "shiny ejector marks" on my brass are right out. I think one of the brass related problems with some 6.5 Creedmoor shooters is many do not have 26" barrels and they attempt to "push" their loads to achieve high velocities in shorter barrels. Anyway, I have no complaints with the Hornady brass but if Lapua made brass for it I would definitely go with it.

Now take this for what it's worth, but I had read that creedmore brass can be made out of 22-250 brass. Lapua makes brass for this cartridge, so... just food for thought.

If you want small primer and Lapua brass start with Lapua 308 Palma, neck down to 6.5 in one step, turn the necks and everything fits perfect.

Yea, I saw where someone on here sized/formed 308 Palma cases into Creedmoor... I may just try that by stepping down to a 7mm/08 die first... Then hit the shoulder/neck with 6.5mm 30 degree die,, lastly put the proper 6mm bushing in...

Im always amazed what i learn here..ive been enjoying my 6.5 creedmore as it is. I honestly dont see the point in trying to make it into something different.
I think its as good as its gonna get.
It has its flaws just like any other cartridge..but used for its intended design its pretty damn cool.
Personally i would leave it and move to a different cartridge.
One that has a longer history and proven track record at doing what your trying to achieve.
With the way our economy is at the moment i dont think throwing money down a rabbit hole it a great idea. You will over pay for just about everything you need to do or aquire for your project.
When switching cartridges is the ticket.
I know..i hate to poo poo anyone's idea..
But lets look at the big picture.
Why spend all that hard hard earned money to bring the same product in a different package to the table...let hornady, or creedmore sports waist its money on it..not you
Thats my realistic point of view
But i completely understand. When a man gets an idea in his head..get out of his way so you dont get run over..
Ive spent money on ideas with little return. Like the 223AI
I enjoyed it and glad i did it. But i probably wouldnt do it again.
Like kittie from that 70's show told Eric when dealing with Red.
Choise your battle wisely hahaha.
