Thinking of a 6BRX build up...To turn, or not to turn???

hey guys, im starting to come full circle now i what i want to build outta my dying 223wssm.

im thinking again about doing the 6brx, because its simple with a little more speed to it. i want to use the 105gr Amax. from what ive been reading i should be able to get about 300-3100fps with it. i shoot varmints and ill probably never be in a match, and the match hollow points dont kill nearly as well as the ballistic tipped amax. I like the ballance of accuracy with terminal performance i get with the 75gr amax in my Savage 223.

anyway, ive read on this site that some guys "in the know" are going away from the tight necks. i really dont want to neck turn, but am i going to be sacraficing a lot of accuracy by not neck turning?

all opinions are welcome.

thanks,
jeremy

PS, im going to use a Broughton 5C barrel. what twist do you guys recommend for the 105gr bullet???

if all you need to do is shoot varmints why bother fireforming with the BRX ? The regular BR with bullets in the 60 to 70 grain range is no pooch and there are alot of good match bullets out there, unless your varmints are over 100 lbs.

to me the small velocity gain with the BRX wouldn't be worth the trouble and you will need a long barrel "28" or more to take advantage of it.That's alot more weight to carrie around in the field.

if you are going with the 6mm you will get great accuracy without neck turning if you use Lapua 6 BR brass with a .272 neck in the chamber.

The 6mm Dasher is very good also and you can get dies off the shelf for it. Good luck with your BRX

contact John708. He is now over 1500 rounds to his 6BRX project rifle. He is shooting a Broughton 31.75" 1:8, 5C barrel. He is very pleased with his 6BRX.

Jeremy,

I have 2 6BRX, One i use as a varmint with 87 Vmax at 3250 f/s. the other is a 600 yds bench gun, shooting 105 Berger's at 2975 f/s that is were they shoot best. Both guns are no turn with Lapua brass. The bench gun has shot a 3.8" at 1000yds and a 1.4" at 600 yds, and a pending world record 54 score with a 1.944" group, 7 first place aggs and 2 2nd aggs this year. If you are going to shoot 105 hornaday. a 9 twist will do, and should run 3050 to 3100. My first BRX, I punched a 6BR, it gave me 225 f/s more, same barrel

Jeremy:

Call Tim North at Broughton and ask for one of the 6mm 5C barrels with that 1:8 button that pulls more like 1:8.3. I bought this over my original different configuration based on his enthusiastic recommendations, and have been amazed at the performance in my 6 Dasher, navigate to my 6 Dasher pages via the link below for some pictures). As Tim told me, it won't shoot the 115s well, but it really hammers with the 105/107s. It works so well, that I have ordered another just to have on the shelf when this barrel eventually dies. Best barrel I have ever owned, hands down. Great service. You won't be disappointed.

Cheers,
