Things you've over heard

Yet I find it interesting all that you have mentioned I have heard in gunshop sessions.
No apology needed, no offense taken here;-).
Not sure what this means. (?)

Are we going to start requiring a DD214 copy prior to discussing military service?

You know it. It was special also in 1968 as I got off the plane in San Francisco too. I can clearly see the face to this day of some asshole throwing an orange that hit the man in front of me in the back of his head. Every now and then I think of his face and maybe we’ll catch up with each other. The screaming and livid hatred. Stuff sort of sticks with you.
You can bet that orange throwing sob went on to become a politician.

Back in High School 1964, a class mate announced to us that he has gotten A Remington M700 270 with a weaver K-4 scope. He is now king of the hill as most of us had hand-me-down 03-A3 Springfields purchased for $3.50 to $14 from the NRA. Kid also says rifle came with a "Lee" loader set. Same guy comes back a few days later saying he had blown-up his rifle. Says he wanted to make fast bullets, takes and gets a can of "Bullseye" as it's a fast powder and filled the case. Can't seat the bullet, too much powder, taps out just enough powder to seat the bullet. Touches it off and is left standing holding splinters of the stock, bbl separated from receiver, scope bent when rising bolt hit it. Yup what a bomb and never realized how close he came to being hurt.

The bad thing is that happened due to ignorance.

I can emphasize a bit with ignorance, especially concerning young people. It's stupidly I have no patience for.

I find it so absurd that we've got a discussion about Vietnam Vets and hurt feelings in the same thread.

I worked with a bunch of Vietnam Vets early on. What they would tell you to do with your hurt feelings would get me banned from the forum if I were to mimic such a discussion so I won't. Frankly I think they had it right. Looking around I can't see anything beneficial to this kinder, gentler crap. Now people jump straight up and start screaming like little girls if they don't like something they hear.

Unbelievable.
The standard reply in the submarine force (probably not now) was that if you were looking for sympathy ,,,,,,,,,,, it could be found in the dictionary between "sh-t" and "syphilis".

I believe it was more of a generational thing. I was too young for VN, but grew up in a neighborhood where many fathers had served in WWII or Korea. My uncle fought at Chosun Reservoir+
Feelings were something you didn't talk about.
The only feeling I remember a VN Vet having was being pissed that the local VFW telling him he "wasn't in a war."

It's just that the VN vets are given a special kind of respect and admiration, and rightly so, but sometimes it goes a little too far and gets into the realm of tall tales and legends that stretch credibility. And posers...
I think we deserve more respect because personally I didn't get any from 1965 until after 9/11/2001 and neither did a lot of my friends.

First, thanks guys for your service. Second, during the battle of the bulge, cooks became regular infantry when the germans counterattacked so you never know. Third, my brother in law asked me one time why I sighted my rifle at 100 yds? He said he sighted his in at 25 yds. Ya reckon he ever shot high? Doug

spot on, he simply did not know. His experience did teach over a dozen of us what not to do. a history teacher was a shooter and took us under his wing with tutelage about reloading basic safety.

Back in 1906 I got my first deer rifle. It was a 30-06. I seem to remember that when I zeroed it at 25 yards with the standard 150 grain SP it was very close at 100 yards. This was actually printed on the 1" grid targets that our company gave out a couple weeks before the opening of deer season. The standard scope back then was a Weaver K4 in low mounts.

This was in NO WAY directed at you sir!
I never mentioned the thread here or anywhere else as far as that goes.
I mentioned to the fellow I wrote about that made the comment about prairie dogs coming up soon, shooting early and late in the year. I made mention of several locals asking ME about MY
maps and wanting to borrow them.

You ASS-U-ME (assumed) my reference was to you.
Your post may be the most recent, but far from the only one of its kind here.
If I offended you, sorry.

Jeff
Apology accepted.

Years ago I was told by a local gun shop owner that I shouldn't buy a stainless steel revolver because "since stainless steel is more expensive they use lower grades of metal for stainless guns." It was especially odd because he was selling stainless revolvers.

Had a shop owner who sold some pretty high end stuff tell me Browning and Weatherby et al used "real steel" in their guns. "Not that cheap carbon steel"
