I have seen some good kids get a great start from the Military that otherwise would have just fallen in with the regular crowd. But these were the types that were smart and wanting a way out.

A younger guy I know was messing about after HS. He joined the Navy. Super smart kid. after a few years they came and tapped him on the shoulder and said come with us. 20 years later he was Master Chief, super successful. He retired after 20 yr approx. Now works for private sector in computer internal security. Changed his life!! but like KM said, smart and wanted to apply himself.

I’m not certain the military is quite what it used to be… many men don’t even realize that they have to sign up for selective service when they turn 18.

That said, it’s a hellava opportunity to begin the rest of your life with, whether you stay till retirement or not. Room, board, medical, dental, clothing, training, pension if you stay long enough.

To refresh, it was: what's your newer or older favorite "doing," movie, TV show-series, or book.

I’d recommend watching the movie The Fighting Seabees, with John Wayne…. Especially with all the vets here.

Reading a book now called The Fourth Turning Is Here, by Neil Howe. Some interesting insight, but not very far into it to give it a thumbs up or down yet.

Off topic--- I don't like Americans dieing for nothing, Pretty much since the Korean War. All lost causes. People died and were crippled for nothing. From now on, if they can't fight it without Americans getting killed, then let these countries go down the drain

My Captain, and another units Captain we often train together with
are always on the field with us, instead of sitting in the Officers tent.
No bogus calls being made while they're watching safe from a distance
Which is the way it should be

I mean people in Washington, and in particular, Lindsey Graham - they should have to fight the wars they start.

I would like to watch it. My Dad was in Okinawa and Saipan.

We went to those Islands last year to see where Pop landed and fought.

Yes it's a mini series about 10 episodes if I remember correctly I have it on DVD and have watched it 3 times myself.
It is a must see

Over half the guys in my unit are now gone, the culprit is Agent Orange that killed them here on US soil years after returning from RVN. My best friend I served with has had over 12 related surgeries, and is not doing well today.

It would be interesting to compare those who were KIA to the numbers who have died from Agent Orange .

I turn 69 in a month. Just missed the draft - Viet Nam era. I never enlisted either, never wanting to be told what to do.

I'm turning 65 next month. Like you, I was not subject to the draft. A couple of high school classmates of mine decided to dodge the job market and join the Marines because they were tired of their parents telling them what to do. That did not end well.


"Medal of Honor" on Netflix is pretty good - haven't seen the entire series yet; just the first few chapters.

It centered around the 5th Marine Regiment and their time on Guadalcanal, Saipan and Okinawa. Their Regimental CO was Chesty Puller and John Basilone was awarded the MOH on Guadalcanal. Basilone was later KIA on Iwo Jima while he was with the 5th MarDiv

My wife and I are watching "The Pacific" for the third time. Being old now, watching it after about five or six years, it's sort of 'new' again.

Excellent series, well filmed and about as realistic as could be considering it's all movie-fake. Col Chesty Puller, being a hero in his own right is well acted and represented too. He's what I consider a "Marines Marine". The magazine "American Handgunner" did a feature piece on Col Puller a while back that was quite the tale of his combat proficency, even with his 1911 .45. Written by Massod Ayoob, it has relevance.

Another good movie is 12 Strong, about a special forces unit at the beginning of the Afghan war.
I was gifted 2 bottles of bourbon, 1 signed and the book written by LTC Nelson from Jim Bauer. I passed it on to my BIL as he wrote his paper in Sergeant Major Academy on the Horse Soldiers before the book was ever published.
Brother displays the signed bottle and Book proudly next to his Stetson with his infantry braid from his time served as CSM of the Calvary brigade here in Oregon.
And yes we enjoyed the unsigned bottle!!

I got this at a local DFW gunshow about 10 years ago.



There is much I would have liked to ask him but didn't feel it would be respectful. He passed on in 2019 at the age of 96.
