There’s a good deal on 44 mag plated bullets but no load data!

A dealer in Calgary has a great deal in 44 mag plated bullets in the 240 grain flavour I want to use in my Henry big boy. I cannot find any data for these. Checked loaddata .com, my Lee books , a few online powder sites. I found one for the now defunct Rainier bullets but 1 entry?.

I want to pull the trigger on these. 500 for 110 bucks Canadian but reluctant until I can find any data. Or crossover reference would be fine

Thanks

Plated is not the same as Jacketed. also, a 500 ct box is a lot for a test. I'd use my favorite cast bullet data for same weight. Does this bullet have a cannular for crimping ? . Welcome to our site & free advice. mike in ct

Welcome. I agree that 500 is a lot to start without knowing if they will suit your purposes, but should you decide to try them, I would start at minimum loads listed for 240-grain cast bullets and carefully work up to your desired performance level.

Be safe.

Yes it has a cannular. I don’t have a favourite cast bullet but I’m getting message. Start with min loads for a 240 grain cast. It’s a 240 which is good for the Henry 44.

Oh I am aware that plated and jacketed are quite different. Jacketed can take high charge rates I believe. That’s the reason for my post. I wish I could just get a Jhp and be done. Our selection in Canada is no where near as good as down there. For most shooting stuff!

I use between 6.5 grains & 7.5 grains of Unique in my 44 mag pistol w a 240grain plain base cast bullet. Seems every batch is just slightly different. So work up carefully. Mike in Ct

Just a thought, but what configuration are the bullets? Make sure that they have a wide enough nose to prevent the bullet noses from setting off cartridges in the magazine.

Plated like a Berry’s or a cast bullet with a copper electroplated wash much like a 22rf?

I would study on data for the weight and start from there.
A lot of cast bullet data is way out dated. Very little has been done in the past 20 years and more. I have used a start load for jacketed with some of the new powders when shooting cast.

WHEN I SHOT a 44 mag in steel 50 yard matches, I tried a ton of bullets.
IMHO production bullets SUCKED.
so I took up bullet casting. well under 3/4 at 25yds with a dot optic.
started with 255's ended at 300's
both a 7.5 ruger and a 20" CARBINE

Thanks guys. I have no plans to cast any bullets. I did find a few plated 240 data sites and they Cross reference very close to cast lead. As alway, I'll start on the light side of the spectrum .

Is gold dot not plated, or deep curl whatever they call them now? My gold dot loads are the same for Sierra jacket hollow point. 240 grain at 1470 fps.

The Speer site specifically calls their Gold Dot bullets jacketed. "Plated" generally denotes a thin "wash" of copper over a lead bullet. A bit heavier than that seen on many .22 rimfire bullets, but the same principal.

Thin plate copper bullets will work well for you but they do have limitations. Use enough case neck bell before seating as the thin plate shears easily. Be careful with too much crimp. If the crimp ruptures the plating it can start to shed in the bore causing fouling. And lastly more often than not best results will be seen if you keep the speed down in the 1100 fps range. For high end speed Jacketed will better serve you than thin plate. Just my 2 cents.
