The ultimate 30 caliber long range hunting rig?????

For all North American game
The ultimate hunting caliber/setup for a .30 cal.
For long range shots 1300 1400 yds.

30-338 Lapua
30-378
300 ultra
300 saum
300 wsm
What's your opinion?

Barrel life isn't a premium because it will be for hunting.
Would like to keep it above 350 rounds though.

My 26" barreled .300 R.U.M. will shoot 200gr Accubonds at 3225F.P.S. with 96.0grs of Retumbo. It is doubtful ANY animal in North America could withstand a hit from that at ANY reasonable range>>>say out to 600 yards. AND at 200 yards it will shoot about 1" groups! Not bad at all..

3000fps with a 230 grain Berger hybrid out of a 26" barrel in my 300 RUM hunting rig. Less expensive brass than the big Weatherby or the necked down Lapua. Standard (magnum) bolt face as well keeps options open for other cartridges as well with the action.

IMHO, the short mags don't have the case capacity to drive the heavy bullets necessary to make kills at long distances. The 230 passes all lighter bullets in velocity before 300 yards and it carries that velocity and energy to the target. The 210 and 200 gr bullets would also be good hunting bullet choices, Berger or Nosler.

1. There is no one solution for all NA game.
2. Have enough respect for hunting to stalk much closer. It's hunting, not shooting steel.

good answers. I'm not good enough yet to take shots at that distance but I plan on being able to. IMHO as far as the ethics go, if your want to be able to shoot that far you need to practice that far with that gun. So here is where I'm starting. I'm lucky enough to live somewhere that is very flat and wide open.... so if a deer is standing at the end of my 1400 yard right of way strip I want to be able to take him.

The 300 WSM will drive a 230 3000 FPS with 7828SSC. It would be great in a long action and be able to throat out (.280 freebore) to get the velocity and still fit magazine. I like the 338 once it gets past 1000. You can see the wash and the splash and the energy retained is like no 30. Matt

+1 on a big 33 cal for those ranges. And an even bigger +1 on getting closer to the animal. Once you actually practice those ranges, you'll realize just how easy it is for something to go wrong with the shot. Then it surely will become a choice of good hunting ethics.

But if you must, the new 28 Nosler case necked up to 30 cal or the 375 Ruger case necked down to 30 cal will give you more than enough speed with any bullet available.

You know all those long range hunting shows edit out the numerous misses right? Missing shots doesn't sell videos or build a fan base ;)

Just my opinion, but the kill zone on a deer doesn't change, no matter the yardage. 8-10 inches or so at 1400 yards? That requires some shooting skills, as you don't get any sighters or spotters.

Didn't intend on starting an ethics debate but what has worked for me in the past is hanging a peice of steel in my cornpile. Until I become better at adjusting for temp and humidity for forecasting cold bore shots this is how I'll do it. In my experience a peice of steel ringing doesn't spook deer as long as they aren't standing fairly close.

May sound bad to you guys but it's worked for me.

My .02c, If you can CONSISTANTLY (not 1 out of 2 or 3/5 but 10/10) put a bullet (with enough energy) to cleanly (vitals) take the animal you're shooting at (whatever the yardage) with a cold bore shot be my guest. If not GET CLOSER. To me that's (others opinions vary) what hunting is about (getting in close)....OK rant off

I would shoot shinny rocks and paper at that distance . Go to your local butcher shop , get some fillets and rib eyes . Money and time saved .

Mention long range hunting and the closet PETAs and those ignorant of how to shoot long range are always there to chime in. The OP asked about the most effective .30 caliber for ranges to 1400 yds. The guy may be a handicapped hunter doing it out of a wheelchair or not be healthy enough to get close. Ever think of that?
Sheesh.

I would also point out that a 300 ultra mag will not do any more at 200 yds than a 308 so maybe some are burning a bit too much powder.
