The Ugly -- View of Rem Factory Barrel Bore

I don't post threads much here but I read & enjoy myself with all the content you guys post, so many thanks. Today, thought I'd make a contribution for what it's worth. I have this Remington 700 Sporter in 223. I purchased it from a friend who never shot it. He purchased it from a friend who never shot it, if memory serves. I shot it a few rounds with a plinking load of mine using the Hornady 55 gr. FMJ. It is basically a 1 1/2-2" load. I bust rocks with it mostly. After my first 20 rounds I tried to clean the rifle. My standard copper stuff is Bore-Tech. After many patches, brushes, & soaking I got a clean patch. I drove over to my gunsmith for a bore scope. The barrel was horrible. I gave it to Dale Woolen, Sr. to shoot & tell me what he thought. He can really manage a rifle on the bench, even a sporter. He shot two groups less than .300" at a hundred & said the rifle shoots fine. I've used it for three years now & it still shoots my varmint load into 3/4" after a couple 1000 rounds. I hope this doesn't make you guys sick but this is what it looks like the other day.

Looks like a button-rifled barrel with quite a bit of carbon deposits. Some brush marks in the carbon deposits, and some light pitting from the carbon deposits and moisture/humidity.
As long as it shoots to your satisfaction, I'd just keep doing what you're doing. You ain't gonna hurt it any more.

Based on his video at about 14 seconds in, it appears to have markings on the lands consistent with a button rifled barrel.

However.

Given the heavy carbon fouling present and the pitting, that's certainly not a given.

Remington used button barrels for certain rifles or at least that's what I'm told.

To my way of reasoning, unless you can corollate a bore scope image to performance on target, who cares what it looks like. The size of the groups posted indicate, at least to me, that the rifle is shooting very well for a factory sporter regardless of the images posted.

If you clean regularly (about every 50 to 60 round) with a mild solvent such as Hoppe's 9 or Shooter's Choice and a bronze brush to prevent excessive carbon build up, in my experience, the rifle will continue to shoot well at least at varmint grade level precision. In other words, you don't need to become obsessed with bore scope images unless the rifle does not shoot well enough to meet your standards.

The image from my Teslong is just about like that. The mirror is threaded and can be adjusted for focus. Perhaps that is the problem?
IDK. I have replaced and adjusted my mirrors 6 ways to Sunday. I do use the Teslong "screen/monitor". Sometimes I wonder if the display is low res?

That's possible. I have no experience with those. Mine just plugs into my phone. I like the portability. I can just carry a small, flat case with me and it's ready to plug in and have a look.

looks like tons of firecracking (Alligator hide)
I'd lead lap that bore myself and smooth it up
it's still got lots of land height

heres what it can look like after some decent lapping
this barrel was over 70 years old and was rusted inside
shoots good now

I'm not sure what an accurate barrel looks like, nor what a POS barrel looks like.

I've seen some fugly barrels that shot just fine...or at least better than this duffer could shoot them.

I've also seen one or two that looked just fine, but that I couldn't find a load that would shoot worth a darn.

This is the reason I probably won't ever bother with a borescope. I'm not sure what it's supposed to reveal. With my luck, I'd scope a tack driver, only to discover that it's fugly — and then not be able to shoot it anymore!

I'll stick to reading frog entrails.
