The walmarts up here do not even get in full cases. They are getting just a few boxes at a time.

Ammo cans are your best friend. It will make 22lr ammo keep.

Tonight I went on Gunbot and looked what was available. Not one box of CCI Blazer 40 gr exists on that site. None - Nowhere.

Apparently that hoarder in SW Pennsylvania is buying it all.

One of the things we often fail to consider is that, as people get older they have a tendency to hoard things. That coupled with the rising dementia and impaired judgment in older population, you get guys that behave exactly as you describe. Like the old proverb says "There by the grace of God, go I"

Hey Joe - I am offended to be put in a barrel with older folks that have dementia and impaired judgment. Not all of us. And I know some youngsters who have those same qualities. We seniors still enjoy shooting, and do so using good judgment; and some are pretty darned skilled with a good rifle.

About 9 months ago, my LGS told me his distributor predicted this shortage would last two years; looks like he might have been right on.

By the way, when I was in the LGS that had all the Varget and 8208xbr and all the primers - I left with one box of 1000 CCi small rifle primers.

That was all I needed.

Hoarding, Government, Retailers, whatever all I know is it's pretty hard to hoard something if you can't get your hands on it. Doesn't matter to me how much I have when I pass my grandson's gonna get it all anyway, not that I have much more than a 2 year supply anyway.

I've become very selective about when/where/what/ and how much I shoot. The days of shooting almost every day and competeing in matches every weekend are pretty much over. The reasons run from component availability/ 22LR availability/ and of course cost. When a pound of Varget goes for $32.00 and 22LR's are non-existant it just makes sense to go for Quality shooting as compared to Quanity shooting.
I don't hoard, but I do try to keep a VERY reasonable inventory of components on hand. I've also moved to the K.I.S.S. principal in that I try to consolidate what powder/primers/bullets, etc. to just one or two different ones. Perhaps not ideal, but one has to do what one has to do to get by in these difficult times. Not to be negative, but I don't see it getting any better in the long run. If anything I just see it getting worse.

Could you imagine how many pounds of powder, thousands of primers and rounds of ammo it would be if everybody that shoots decides they are going to double their supplies. Now throw in the fact that there are more people buying guns then ever. People that never shot a gun in their life. Then throw in the guys that haven 10 or more times that amount and the numbers would be HUGE !!!!! I now guys that have probably 3 to 5 hundred pounds of powder and then wonder why you can't find anything. I talked to a few guys like the Hornady team at matches and they said they are running pretty much around the clock and can't keep up. But they said its getting better. I also talked a long time at Nationals with the Sierra Representative and he said the same exact thing. Matt

There is plenty of supplies out there. As has been stated, many lgs have what we need. The largest shortages are found at places shown on the internet. At a recent gun show in pa, a local dealer had numerous cases of primers and dozens of 1 and 8 # containers of mainly Hodgdon, IMR, alliant, and a few accurate powders. I recently decided to go back to CCI primers. I was able to buy all types of CCI primers at this show except CCI 250.

I finally got notified by Brux that my new 7mm barrel is ready. Changing over from 6.5 284 to 284 Win and now I can't find the bullets I want to try nor the powder.
I wish Hodgdon would ship out a boatload of H4831sc. And I wish Berger would crank up production of their 180gr 7mm hybrid.
We hear the industry people say (including Hodgdon on their website) that this mess is strictly caused by demand being so much stronger than supply. I am beginning to believe that something else is in play. I shoot a lot-NRA highpower long range, and I havn't bought much of anything in the last year, been using the components I had on hand.
How are we contributing to the shortage when if you want to purchase something you can't because nobody has it in stock?
I checked every online vendor I could find on the internet today and not one place had H4831sc in stock. Look at Powder Valley for example. Their page for Hodgdon powder is a joke, not a slam on Powder Valley, they are a great place for reloading supplies. Hodgdon's website says they are shipping powder every day, more than they ever have, etc....Well where is it going. It sure isn't going to Powder Valley.

It's like a patriotic duty to stock pile 2nd Amendment wampum in case Armageddon arrives. Which if it does get here I guess you could stop just about anywhere and find all you need. At some point this will even out when we all have hundreds of pounds of stockpile in every shooters home. If Armageddon doesn't come there are going to be some wild yard sales. Around here every Memorial Day weekend in the spring there is the "100 Mile Yard Sale". In a few years I guess I'll have to join all the traffic. Imagine what estate sales will be like. A hundred pounds of Varget for $10! Valhalla is approaching, fellas. Like the man said, if you can live long enough however.

I still think it's the hoarding thing, when stuff comes in at Sportsmans there is a line standing out front of the store waiting to buy all the 22s they will let them. I also know a guy who works the gun counter at Wally World and he says the same thing.

I love the fact that all those in the long lines waiting for the store to open are running to the .22LR shelf. That means that they're not scarfing up all the good powders.

I actually saw a shelf full of IMR4064 this week at my local Cabela's. Came in at noon on Monday and there was still stock left at noon on Thursday. I was shocked. Only thing sitting on the .22LR shelf was the price tag and a sign limiting the amount one could purchase (as if there was anything to purchase).

I seen 4064 at Basspro for $33 per pound, a little excessive, I put my other items back on shelf and left with nothing. I don't like gouging. I am well stocked so it wasn't a hard decision.

In the Fall 2013 issue of VARMINT HUNTER magazine, M.L. McPherson wrote an article on this subject titled "Supply and Demand". It is worth reading. Here is a short summary:

"Demand suddenly rises so quickly that it outstrips supply. Supply is slow to catch up and so the perception that shortages will last a long time and, further, that they are due to market manipulation increase over time. Whenever supply comes in, buyers sweep it up, leaving shelves empty and the impression that there are continuing shortages.

It doesn't take much of an increase in demand to create the impression of shortages:

Here is the critical fact: before the [election of Obama], no related manufacturer had the facilities to increase production [by] more than about 40%. Moreover, even if a company did have such capacity, it could not affordably obtain raw materials to do so — companies [down line] that supply raw materials cannot increase capacity more than about 40%.

In economics this is called the supply-chain bottleneck: Somewhere down the supply chain there will be a supplier that simply cannot ramp up his production as fast as those up line would like. It becomes the slowest vessel in the convoy. During wartime a whole convoy could only move as fast as the slowest ship. So it is with a sudden increase in demand, no matter what the reason.

Which will be Factory Loaded Ammo for the most part. Hand loaders have, in the past, enjoyed adequate supplies of "downstream" product, that which is left over after "flagship products" have been manufactured and sold.

You can pretty well bet that the first customers in line at the "Powder Mill" are the ones that take their shipments in barrels, not bottles. Same thing all down the line.


What I'd like to see, in order to put an end to this hoarding epidemic, is for all powder, primer, and civilian ammo producers, to hold all their product until their supply chain is bursting. Then release it all at once. This will fill the shelves and leave the "profiteers" holding the proverbial bag. Why buy from someone who wants $100 for a box of primers when they're on the shelves everywhere for a third of that.

Once people see the product on the shelves regularly they'll be less inclined to "grab a few extra's".

Those guys will also act like they are doing you a favor as they are trying to sell it.

They are also the first to lowball you no matter what you are selling. I posted a NF NXS 5.5-22x56mm scope for $1500.00 with no intention of selling. This was on a local site for ND. Within 5min some guy came in with 800 offer. Just told him yeah I would buy it for 800 also and I am trying to sell mine.
