I was reflecting on the trip to the range my wife and I took yesterday afternoon. It was an impromptu trip as she had only shot her newly built Pre-64 Model 70 in .284 Shehane at 100 yards. We had finished our morning chores and as we relaxed with a cup of coffee on the deck, I mentioned the wind was light and the temps were mild. She reminded me she hadn't shot her rifle much yet. Fortunately, we live about 10 minutes from our range. I loaded up her rifle and my Shehane too.
Shooting off the bench, rear bag and a bipod, we dialed her into a solid 300 yard zero. The rifle was showing awesome accuracy for a newer shooter. This is a hunting rifle so I wanted her to get more comfortable using the bolt, I loaded 3 rounds into the magazine. Winds were from our back, but switching a little from left to right. She proceeded to shoot her last three shot group at 300 yards while I watched through the spotting scope. I didn't tell her anything other than to focus on the target and make good trigger presses. All of her groups were 1/2 MOA but to her, they have to land in the center to be good, while I am looking for grouping information. She looked through the spotting scope and smiled. I said congratulations, the rifle and you can both shoot!
We also shot my Surgeon actioned Shehane for fun. It is a joy to shoot as well, an easy 1//3-1/2 MOA rifle. Both rifles use Lapua brass, neck turned and fired several times through a match rifle, H4831SC, 175 gr Berger Elite Hunters and 210M primers. Both rifles have Thunderbeast suppressors, NF 5.5-22X NXS scopes with the MOAR reticle.
I am still smiling as I post this. Custom rifles are worth every penny when it comes to quality and the confidence they give the shooter. They are simply fun to shoot!
