The Mutt remains amazing.

On Saturday, July 13th, three of us had a "Shootout" with three Dashers at the Copperhead Cove range near Winnsboro, LA. The participants were as follows: Rusty Durham of Haynesville, Ricky Reeves of Haynesville, and yours truly of Baskin. The range is on a friend's farm (Bob Nelson) and we thank him for the use of the range and also for allowing us to stay overnight in his very nice guest house.

This is a preliminary report since I am having trouble retrieving pictures from my camera. The rifles used today are as follows:
Rusty Durham- Stiller Cobra (aka Mutt) shooting 32.2 gr. of Varget and 107 Sierra Matchkings. Billy Stevens chambered the 7.83 Brux barrel.

James Mock-Stolle Panda w/ 32.2 gr. of Varget and 108 Berger Bt @300 and Bart's 105 Infinity @ 600. Dusty Stevens chambered the 7.5 twist Krieger barrel.

Ricky Reeves- 40x Remington (unable to post picture) w/ Laminated wood stock and Bartlein barrel chambered by Dixie Gun Works. To be fair the 40x was having ignition problems and did not give us a fair representation of its potential accuracy.

A word about the overall winner.. the Mutt, was bought at a yard sale by Ricky Reeves a few years ago, and it was UGLY. However, it showed extreme accuracy with a Krieger 6 PPC barrel. I traded for it and added a Panda barrel to it (the barrel required no fitting for the Stiller Mutt). I had it painted a metallic gray by a local auto body shop. At 80 years of age, I cut way back on my shooting and sold the Mutt to Rusty.

When I first posted about having this Dasher test, Butch Lambert correctly stated that with three shooters shooting three rifles, there would be confusion. However, there is quite a bit of data that we got on this WARM Louisiana day.

At 300 yards the Mutt really showed true accuracy with a .570 inch agg w/ three shooters.

At 600 yards the Panda finished first w/ an agg. of 2.23 inches.

With the ignition problems, the 40X had one terrible group that destroyed its agg. Ricky Reeves did have a victory because he shot the best agg with the three rifles at two distances and had the smallest group at both distances. (.401 and 2.02 ")DSCF2899.JPG Here is a picture taken a few years ago at the Copperhead Cove.

PS- The 40x was shot by all three shooters and the scores were used. Most groups were okay, but there was several pieced primers and mis fires. The one 6"+ group ruined the agg. for that rifle. Ricky plans to have the firing pin aperture bushed and other remedies done. The rifle has great potential in my opinion.

Although I am still unable to retrieve pictures from my camera, I need to thank Kent Bennett for his help. He scored all the targets, but did not shoot because he was recovering from recent surgery, Below is a picture taken a few years ago at the Cove.DSCF0020 (2).JPG

Here is a picture of Ricky Reeves at a different range shooting his Kelbly 6BRA at 600 yards. Ricky was our best shooter at the Cove.DSCF3005.JPG

Ricky is picking on y’all. Wish he would come back and shoot at Pioneer. Those guys are getting better every match. Too good for me.

We used a 10 inch gong at 600 yards for sighting. Here are 2 successive shots on DSCI0375.JPGthe gong..one by me and one by Kent Bennett. This was with the Panda/Krieger using 32.2 gr. of Varget and Bart's 105gr. Infinity rebated BT bullets.
