The most under-rated centerfire cartridge......???

Re: The most under-rated centerfire cartride......???

30/06....with any bullet of 165 grains or heavier. It is not "new" or "different" or "sexy". Just does the job....every time....with authority.

Re: The most under-rated centerfire cartride......???

30-06 again, from hunting anything in North America and most in the world , to plinking, to long range target work

Re: The most under-rated centerfire cartride......???

There are so many old standards that might be called under rated. I agree 30-06 but I have found while that would be great, all around, over the world gun, it is a bit much for my needs. The 36-06 should be ideal for big bears, ok for moose and good for all big non-dangerous African,,etc... Yes, it will kill deer too.

In usa, the 30/30 will do everything the 30-06 will do for North American Hunting. Levers are under appreciated too.

The 7x57 and 6.5x55 both have a cult following in USA,, but; in general I would say under appreciated. And under offered by both gun and ammo providers. The heavy for caliber bullets do for these rounds, exactly what heavy bullets do for the .223. BTW, the heavy load in 30-06 was 220 grain. Imagine what that could do?

My pick one, would be 7x57. As I gain experience, the 6.5 is a very capable 2nd. Then 30/30 and finally 30-06. The old 06 is offered by just about any gun builder with a suitable action. Those other three are very slim pickins.

Want to be called A) old, B) ignorant or C) a "Fudd"? Simply mention the 30-30.

Re: The most under-rated centerfire cartride......???

And I didn't even know the '06 was underrated ;D

Re: The most under-rated centerfire cartride......???

I'd agree with 30-06. Friendly shooter suggested that this is the oldest of the "modern" cartridges and it is enjoying modern components making it the current "poor-man's magnum." He said this after a 300WM purchase.

Re: The most under-rated centerfire cartride......???

I built a very nice custom 30-'06 for myself a couple of years ago, using a new trued M700 LA, Bartlein 5R 1-11.25tw bbl in Rem varmint contour, chambered with a Serengeti reamer from PTG, bedded in a McMillan A3-5 stock w/clampbar cheekpiece, Timney 510 trigger, NF steel 20 MOA scope base, & PTG Stealth DBM w/Accurate Mag 30-'06 5rd mags, all done up in CeraKote FDE to match the McM stock's molded-in desert camo. It shot fine, but even with a SF SOCOM brake and/or SOCOM 7.62 suppressor, recoil was such that I'd have a very tough time spotting my hits (or misses). Pulled that bbl a couple of months ago and replaced it with another Bartlein sendero contour 1-8.5tw done in 6.5x55AI.

What a difference! Even more accurate with S142MKs & Berger 140 Hybrids & H4831, and mild enough recoil to allow me to see hits & misses through the scope almost every time.

Re: The most under-rated centerfire cartride......???

Not much "doin" that can't be done with the 30-06. Elephants to sage rats, 100-1200yds and beyond with the right nut behind the bolt. Just flat out get's er done.

As The Cable Guy would say "I don't care who you are, that's funny!".

Re: The most under-rated centerfire cartride......???

I agree with all those that picked the 30-06, but for a different reason. I can walk into any place that sells firearms from Cabelas to Wally World and buy ammo in a pinch.

Re: The most under-rated centerfire cartride......???

I believe the op's question was about UNDER-RATED cartridges. The 30/06 is most definitely NOT an under-rated cartridge. It may have more loadings available than any other factory rifle on the planet from 110g - 220g bullets. It may be the most versatile cartridge ever and will kill anything on the N.A. continent. Most gun gurus of the 50's and 60's recommended it as one of the do-all cartridges available to the guy who could only afford ONE rifle. So please let's not list this cartridge as "UNDER-RATED". Thus ends the rant. dedogs
