The dreaded Carbon Ring??

I have read in many places about the carbon ring and pretty much knew about it but until last year when I got a Teslong never had a chance to see one or what I thought was one. As you guessed I thought all of my barrels had one in varying degrees.

But the last week I was cleaning my 223 barrel and noticed something that I had seen many times but not thought deeply about it. Here is the picture:

What you see in the middle of the round picture is the black on the neck of the chamber but that halo around the clear picture is the clue. That is the 45 degree ramp from the chamber neck to the start of the bore. Since that is bright that carbon stain in the neck is very thin and not a carbon ring.

To me now I have found a way to get a quantitative analysis of when I need to worry. Turns out that all of my barrels are fine. in fact the picture is not quite clear enough but i can see the the chamber neck edge of the halo is not a continuous line like the bore. That is just how thick that stain is. I think that ramp is maybe .015 high or so. That means I maybe have a .001 smaller chamber neck at the most.

I am one of those that cleans after every range trip. I use rod guides but they stop in the case body so the brush that goes into the bore scraps this area every time. That is why I have never seen a carbon ring or the evidence of one with spikes in pressure. For once OCD is good. :)

Just wanted to share this observation with you guys.

What I see is where carbon stops at case mouths. A ring could form there, but your cleaning is taking care of it. The 'halo' is chamber end, and it looks like you trim pretty far short of chamber end.
This is a ring building a bit more, still not bad:

I have seen this frequently after a range session, which I believe to be a carbon ring. Usually taken care of by C4 or JB's carbon_ring.JPG

I remove that ring with a slotted jag and a small strip of fine scotch brite. just rotate it while i watch on my borescope.

What slotted jag and patches are you using? I’m looking to buy a lug recess cleaning tool for a stolle panda and a Bat M.

Barely on topic here but I wanted to say that I bought the C4 along with eliminator when I stocked up this time.

I used the eliminator as usual and then ran 3 patches of the C4 and it definitely picked up a little more copper. Barrel was spotless when I was done.

carry on, good thread

Im just using s standard slotted jag. I cut a piece of scotchbrite about 3/8" wide and 1.5" long, slip it in the jag. Insrt it from the breech thru a bore guide while I watch on my bore scope. Once on the carbon I just spin the rod until carbon in gone and rinse it all out with prolix and dry it. I use Flitz liquid (green stuff) on a bronze brush about 25-30 strokes cleans all carbon and copper from the bore. Clean out the flitz with prolix and patches, dry it and done. Verified by bore scope.
