I was up in Salmon (ID) visiting Elmer Keith back in the mid-seventies. His considered opinion: given any rifle and cartridge to hit a man sized target at 1000 yards with the fisrt shot, he wanted a Sharps rifle chambered in 50-90.
Mike Venturino hit a 36" square target at an even one mile with his second shot down at the Yuma Proving Grounds in front of a couple dozen members at the bi-annual forensic society with a Shiloh Sharps chambered for that same 50-90. I now own one, and I could have you ducking for cover with the first shot. You wouldn't likely be standing still there for my second.
