Hey Feller, after reading what the other guys and yourself have said I will say this.... I totally understand the "I want it to say COLT on it and spell it when I cock it" frame of mind! Got it it myself and if mine went missing I would replace it immediately. However, IMHO, the 3 screw Ruger is better built, more accurate, and will withstand far more punishment than the colt ever thought about. Freedom Arms mod 97 is at least twice as good in every respect than the Ruger. Standard Arms is a fine copy also and is well respected, I just don't have enough first hand knowledge to say it. But if you want to just find out enough to form your own opinion you can pick up a Cimarron and it's a real copy and will handle anything that the Colt will pressure wise and is in my opinion just as accurate and just as well built as a 3rd gen Colt.... THERE! I just went and made myself say it.... John

I have been shooting cowboy action for 25 years. I shoot a lot. When I started I had one
genuine Colt and soon bought a second one. At one time I had about 75 as they are
addictive. I also have a number of Rugers...all models ...flat tops, etc. My first Ruger was
a 3 screw 44 Mag in 1967 or 8. Now comparing all the guns....yes the Ruger is stronger but
I don't shoot heavy loads. I have been shooting the same two second generation Colts'
for over 20 years. Tens of thousand of rounds. 1 broken mainspring in all those years
I see and talk with cowboys and there is simply no comparison ....someone told me they
are like a Rolex....HOWEVER....any new Colt need to be tuned by a good smith. My two gun
were from the late 1950's and are smooth a glass. I have sold off over the years most of my
Colts and guess what? Made a bunch of money on them. Buy once cry once.
..I have seen more Rugers break transfer bar than you could imagine.
A Colt tuned properly will run forever. Cody Conager of the Cowboy Shop in West Virgina
is my go to guy. Again we are talking mild loads....3.0 gr clay with 125 grain bullet for
about 800 fps in my 357 mags.

I understand the OP's desire for an original Colt. I have a 2nd gen 5 1/2 barrel in 45 Colt, and I would never part with it. I bought it to go cowboy shooting. Never did the cowboy shooting but still have the Colt.
I was amazed at the accuracy of the Colt SAA. I loaded a RNFP 250 gr lead over 14.6 gr of 2400, for about 850 fps. (Not a cowboy load) Very easy to shoot.

I would find a new or used (depending on your budget) 1873 Uberti in your favorite calibre, put a set of reproduction Colt black rubber grips on it and go shoot it or just look at it. It's a lot cheaper and just as satisfying.

No.... its not. Not even close. :) One is shooting ACTUAL history. The other is like eating food without taste buds.

I Haven't owned any revolvers for over 20 years. I have no use for them. I don't like them. But shooting, an original Colt would be as satisfying as shooting my 1943 US rifle M1. Maybe more, as its older.

I really believe that if you can swing it with out missing to many meals you NEED to get you an old Colt about as bad as anybody I've ever seen! You can't take it with you, and they are hard to loose money on if you just hold on to it for a while....my two cents worth, John ;)

Whatever you do, get one with a Kopec letter. Because then you actually KNOW the HISTORY you are holding in your hand.

of all the repros the Cimarron is far and away the best. I used them for cowboy shooting for 20 years.
That said, MY Colts are my Great-grandfather's 71/2" Bisley and my3rd Gen Colt built for me about 25 years ago. 43/4" color cased and 1/4 coverage engraved with walnut stocks from a walnut tree I cut off of the family farm (settled in 1816) that was settled after they fought in the Battle of New Orleans and sailed up the Mississippi to the Freidheim/Cape Girardeau area. It has 45 and my name for serial number.

It talks to me; C-O-L-T when I cock the hammer.

I looked at a bunch of Colts at a Dealer, here in Kerrville. He had a rusty version for 5K and others up to 25 K. Beautiful collectors, sure. I wanted a shooter. A little time later, Larry D Scott put a matched pair of Uberti’s up for sale. 2 very nice 357s with worked triggers for $1200. I bought them. Someday I might find a Colt, but the Uberti’s scratched the itch and shoot great! They’ll take full house 357 loads without a worry.
