The ACTUAL cost of Rifle Match Ammo

How little do you drive? I drive more than I do almost anything else and I only live 6 minutes from work
Not everyone is in that situation. I've driven a very long way for a very long time to avoid urban and suburban areas.

Yes, it's a consequence of my choices. Just pointing out that your situation does not describe the situation everyone is in.

These kinds of analysis lead to questioning your participation in the sport. We didn't get into this to save money - it costs what it costs. As Gus McCrea once said, "life is short, shorter for some than others". My favorite is, "the man who wins in the end is the one who has the most groundhog hunts logged."

If this sport adds value to your life, then subtract the costs of your sport from any potential stress medications or shrink sessions you may need without it. ;) Also money can never replace life experiences, i.e., participating in a match on a beautiful day or a day in the field enjoying God's bountiful nature.

PS: I am going hogging this afternoon - farmer called - needs the Ground Hog Man's services. "Have Rifle will Travel", is loading up!

Don't give up on the shooting sports..... I too have gone more to competitive .22 shooting and really enjoy... The .22 stuff has really caught on in my neck of the woods with lots of shoots. Fun to put together those .22 target rifles and they last a long time before anything needs to be replaced.

There would appear to be multiple reasons for the perceived higher expense of shooting. Yes, on a current dollar basis, components are generally more expensive. What would happen if you inflation adjusted the price, on like components? Our money has been devalued so much that most everything looks insanely expensive. A perspective, I was told yesterday that you could buy an ounce of gold in 1910 for $20. What would that same ounce of gold cost today.

If you are on a fixed income, inflation causes much more plan than to those who income adjusts with inflation.

Obviously, still the supply and demand part of the pricing that exists, but it is always there, sometimes it helps in oversupply and sometimes it bites in over demand.

Just my two cents.

Is golf cheaper? I have never and never intend on played a single game of golf but I am curious.
I hunt and fish at what for most would be a high level. My wife tells me at tax time how much she has on the books which is $25-30K per year.

I think the answer depends on how you choose to participate in either. You can do either pretty affordably or you can spend a pretty good sized pile of $$$ doing them. I mean. you can buy a decent used modified remington br rifle for about $800-$1000 or you can have Lester build you a new, pretty high end custom for around $6500 per his website pricing.

You can golf at the local course with yard sale golf clubs too. Or, you can travel around playing some high dollar courses with custom clubs and a caddie. Lol!

A man is going to have a hobby--and he will spend all he can get his hands on to do well in it
I quit racing after about 25 years --It was like getting promoted--getting a sign on bonus--and getting top pay for a No Show job --Best single move I ever made! I spent a small % of what I made on selling out of racing on shooting hobby--several new rifles, barrels, reloading equipment, components etc Nice scopes! Now when I buy powder, bullets, assec's etc I smile as it is a Tiny percentage of what racing would costs--shooters are facing rising costs --I get it! But believe me you have it pretty darn good after you get the initial costs behind you--reloading stuff last a lifetime and after a while it is down to buying the basics and consumables--entry fees for a match are a tiny price vs racing--bullets , powders, brass, barrels cost WAY less than race tires, race gas etc
I Hate the price increases--but in the grand scheme of things after you have your glass and basics you are really pretty good vs other things you could be doing. Have you seen green fees for the top venues?
Funny thing is Every match I attend has a lot of shooters that used to be in the race business--the skills crossover very well--many are now smithing and doing well --if you can build a race engine a rifle seems like something you do on lunch break--competition is competition--men will seek it and give everything they have to it.
Shooting sports ain't that bad---I don't know what I would have done had I not discovered it--It is my new Joy and Passion!

Pulling tractors and racing boats might be even worse than car racing!

This is a fact. I was flat broke when I raced. Every penny went in the car. And its worth nothing when you sell it. I have had many customers make money on rifles if they keep them for a few years. Literally sell then for what they bought them for or more. The stuff we play with holds its value better than any other hobby I know of. And your right, a lot of us that used to race or were mechanics got into BR for some reason. I was a mechanic for 15 years before going full time as a smith. Its the same mentality in many ways.

I try not to think about the price of reloading components because when I do I get down in the dumps, knowing that when I retire I probably won’t be able to afford it anymore. The way I look at it I can’t put a price on the friends that I have made and the people that I have met while competing!! It’s also something about shooting small groups and winning a match after all we are all trying to win but even when we don’t win it’s fun to watch other shooters shoot well too, because it inspires me to try to shoot better. So for now I am going to enjoy every pull of the trigger and do my best to put every shot in the X ring.

You go into it with the intention of burning money down the barrel, so, what's a little more, as long as you can actually afford it. And if a person wants to do it bad enough, they'll find a way. I got tired of the practicing and the travel after a few yrs of it, had a lot of fun, but, it can get old. Did the same in archery, had a lot of fun with both, met good people, but, it wears on you over time, there are also other things to do in life. These days, I don't want my time spent doing things I like, to be ruled by time & travel & worry needed to accomplish a goal. I can if I want to, but, I don't "have to", if I don't.
