The ACTUAL cost of Rifle Match Ammo

Texas Solo

B.S. High Master
Just bought some more Alpha 6Dasher brass ($125). I shot this new brass Saturday in a 60rd match, + 6 sighters.
So 66 rds total @ $2.18 per round = $143.88. Add the $25 entry fee = $168.88.
Now, reusing brass eliminates the $1.25, so now we're down to .93 per round. $.93 x 66 = $61.38. Add the $25 entry fee and I'm at $86.38.
When I started F Class, 10 years ago, I calculated. 75
per round with used brass. So my ammo costs have increased .18 per round, or $11.88 per match, or 19.35%.
Rounding off, that's 1.93% per year. None of this includes equipment. I'm retired with very limited disposable income. I may be getting squeezed out of the game.

Not looking forward to 2025, especially if the election goes South.

Brass. 1.25 cents per round
Powder 22 (8 lb Varget @ $400)
Primer 09
Bullet. 60
------------------------
$2.18 PER ROUND !

This does not include any shipping/hazmat or tax.

Add it up to what it cost to shoot out a barrel. Barrel cost included. If it has a 2,500 round life span that’s about $5500 if your brass lasts that long and don’t have to buy more

Since I discovered 22lr I'm shooting less center-fire every year, and probably this will be my last in FClass. Match ammo cost less than a Berger bullet, and barrel life is virtually unlimited.
I've shot both cf and rf at a competitive level of BR and I found overall, rf to be a bit MORE expensive! I could probably flip that by a little bit by shooting less rf ammo but I shot a lot of ammo in rf at the time and at 30 bucks a box, it adds up in a hurry. Both are expensive hobbies but nothing close to racing. I put it on par with pretty serious golf, where you travel a little and play other courses etc, but not talking Pebble Beach either. Even golf, custom clubs and a modest travel to nice ranges etc is on par with what we spend.

Yes if you travel to a decent course it's 150 or more, then gas food balls snacks, I played for 20 yrs just new drivers and 3 woods and Balls, tournaments also they can get expensive Medal Play or Scrambles

How many rounds can be expected out of a Tikka T3x varmint in 223
Run moderately, the 223 is no worse on barrels than most. Stick to single base powders, not too fast - my go to is Varget or H4895. Keep it clean, don't shoot until the barrel gets hot and it should last a long time. I have a match barrel with 1600 rounds on it (75g/Varget mainly) and I expect another 1000 out of it. I may move the chamber forward around Xmas time. Tikka factory barrels are pretty good and always seem to shoot well. I recently bought a UPR in 6.5 Creed which shoots well out of the box.
