The 22bra Thread

If you buy the expensive MDT mags they work fine. If you want to feed from a mag and you want to have the total easy button go to the 22 XC. It's super easy to tune you can shoot it fast or you can shoot it slow and it is made to feed from a magazine. None of the other cartridges are going to feed as well as the 22 XC.

I've shot both. I can't say the 22 BR ackley will out shoot the 22 XC. They are very close. Aside from the extra grains of powder the 22 XC actually has the advantage to the hunter because TUBB always has brass, and his current price is $82 per hundred for both primer types. Getting 6BR brass right now is pretty slim unless you're already set up.

In a benchrest competition that 22BR Ackley might shoot smaller. I've never shot them head to head but that would be an interesting contest. They are both really great and I love them both. I'm selling a lot of 22 stuff right now simply because the bullets are available. A lot of people are opting for the 22 XC and the 6XC simply due to the availability of brass.
Between 22bra and 22xc arent you talking a difference of 20gr in powder capacity?

You want an 8 twist for 22bra and 22xc.

3050 fps is 320,000 RPM with a 7 twist. Which is terminal velocity.

8 twist is good to 3500 fps.
I’m asking because I have a 223 with an 8 twist. I was reading this thread and realizing that if I rechambered my barrel to 22BRA I could shoot 88ELD or 85.5 Berger and it would stabilize. I’m shooting the 75 and 80ELD now. I lengthened the throat on my 223 to get them out only in the neck. My COL is 2.565. I’m shooting the 75’s at 2980fps and the 80’s at 2940ish. It shoots good but thinking about something different with heavier bullets. I was going to get a 7 twist barrel to make it 223 but the 22BRA looks interesting.

Just for reference. You can get 22br velocities out of a 223 Ackley with a long freebore. Which might be another option.

223 peak with 90 grain is about 2850ish
223 Ackley would be about 3000 fps with a 90 grain
22br velocity peak is about 3050ish with a 90 grain.
22bra is about 3200ish.
22xc and 22 Creed should be about 3350ish.

FYI...I shot my 22 Dasher/7.5 Krig in last Sundays 600 y Fclass match. New load I got from this thread.

new load: 32.5/H4350 85.5 Mo Berger 3080'/s not near as tight as
old load: 28.9/Varget 90vld Berg 3035'/s

may try a ladder test with 32-34/H4350 85.5Mo

Ok, got some range time in...tried some RL15.5 loads with 3 different bullets, Berger 80.5, 85.5 and 88 ELD-M. Using the same charge weight (32.0gr) in all 3, the 80.5s shot better than the others. Velocity was 3150 with 80.5, and no pressure signs. Not having experience with this cartridge, and not wanting to toast a new barrel, figured I'd get the experience of the shooters here...Thanks for any input....rsbhunter

88 would be closer to 30.5 for best accuracy. 32 is pretty hotfor an 88.

Yes, 88's were just starting to show real mild signs....I'm willing to drop down in charge weights on the 80.5's if I can get the same accuracy. I based the load charge off of the forum from 22 BR posts that showed 32.0gr of RL16 and 88gr eldms in a straight 22 br. I did load 3 rnds each afterward of 31.6. 31.8 and again, 32.0 with the 80.5 Berger fullbore. Might try to drop down to 30.5 , a d work up? rsbhunter

Talking about TS 15.5. NOT R16. TS 15.5 is very close to Varget. R16 is nearly 2 grains slower than TS15.5.
88 will shoot at about 30-30.5. Work up from there.
80.5 will take about 32 or bit more MAX.

Yes sir, 32.0 of RL 15.5 and Berger 80.5 full bore. This is an amazing cartridge. The 3 shot UNRETESTED group was .6xx at 200 meters. This was at .025 off the lands. Will test at .10, .015. and 020. I'm going to test 30.0 up to 31.0 with the 88 ELDM's. I tried some RL16 and Varget loads, but nothing jumped out.....rsbhunter

Yah it will shoot. No doubt about that.

I just got my 22bra back. Just today I remounted it back in a a better 700 action with a good rail on top. Installed the rifle Basix 6oz trigger, and cleaned the bore one last time.
I got 100 80.5 to try, and 200 pieces of Lapua brass. Got to annel and clean the brass. Yesterday I trimmed them all to 1.550.
Got notes on my targets from previous load work .Basically 31 grains of 4350. And will do seating depth testing on these 80.5s and they should be good to go. This will gun two for match day in two weeks. Owl bout forgot, it might even be wearing a 42x NF on top too!!!!

lots of good info on this thread. thanks Matt_3479
im going to start shopping for a 22bra barrel now. im convinced i need one.
a 1:8 and at least 26" long. i want to hit that 3200+fps node

Well more ammo will be here in a couple days, but initial pressure test with n150 went good. I have ladders loaded up with n140, n150 and varget to do a side by side comparison. If there’s a 8208 starting point I’ll load that up as well.

Today’s pressure test went from 29gr’s to 31.1 with velocities of 2953 to 3125fps with no pressure with the 85.5’s.

I need to find a powder that is available, if not affordable! Rl 15.5 works real well for velocity and accuracy, but the availability and price kill me. Just read where Alliant , CCI, and other products under the same company are having price increases from 5% to 15%. Time to dust off the slingshot....BUT, it could be worse, BH209 black powder substitute runs $80.00 for 10 Oz !!!!! $124.00 a POUND! rsbhunter
