We decided to go test the new batch of 16' 6.8 barrels and handloaded 85gr Barnes TSX bullets on some Texas hogs, near Victoria.
It was 9am by the time I got off the plane in Houston and made the 2 1/2 hr drive to Chris's ranch. Adam had already shot a med sized hog about dark with a 18' stainless 6.8 AR I built for him a few months ago.
Took 15 min to suit up and head out, 4-5 decent 6-8pt bucks that Chris calls culls were at the feeder when we drove up. It took about an hour for things to settle down then 2 separate groups of bachelor bucks came back in and were fighting over the feeder chutes, quite amusing way to pass time.
Around 11pm I heard Chris fire 2-3 times at the other hog log about 600yds away.
I was watching the deer through the PVS14 and hit the IR torch to lighten things up a bit. some of the deer jerked and looked straight at me like they could see the light, I think they noticed the big red eyeball of the torch, so I shut it off, just then a nice boar run straight out across the clearing to the hog log so I watched for a few minutes to see if any others were with him. I clicked the torch on again and he jumped and started to spin, I had the aimpoint between his eyes as he was facing dead on but as he spun I touched off. I heard the twack of that little 85. He went about 40 yds.
I was able to get the 85gr Barnes up to 3176fps from a 16' 6.8, that is near .243 velocities out of a 16' AR15 and the Barnes TSX went through both shoulders so that bullet doesn't need weight to get penetration on a 275lb hog. Deadly combination for hog hunters.
ETA- Chris and Adam were also using 6.8SPCs with PVS14s and the new Barnes 85gr TSX, we all scored. Bacon! Bacon! Bacon!
