Texas Cold Weather Discussion

I am in the upper elevations of West virginia and this is normal here. I had a 34K generator installed to cover any issues
May I know, ballpark, what that cost for you? Our $11k quote excluded the cost for the propane company to run a line to the generator and do their connections. And the generator guy said, ideally, we would add another propane tank instead of relying on the 250 gallon one that's already in the ground. Ay caramba.

I know the pain. Ours used to go out up to a week at a time, back about 15-20 years ago. At least every other month.

Had a house full of boys so that helps a bit(going outside). Would drain water heater for emergency water, which really prolonged it's life.... lasted 35 years.

Wood heat in winter, creeks and lakes for water.

I'm pulling for you all,it will pass. Good luck.

I guess we will all remember the big freeze of 2021. I was planning on having a home generator installed in our new house before hurricane season hit, I never thought I would need one for being froze in.

I have lived in the Gulf Coast Area my entire life and have never seen it like this. We recently moved to Tomball just north of Houston and last night it hit 5 degrees. That’s without the wind chill. The entire State is without electricity.

8 inches of snow. we are lucky we have gas log fireplace. We hung sheets on all of the entrances to the living room, and the place is comfortable enough. I have been shoveling snow into buckets, thawing it on the stove and using it to flush the toilets.

Hopefully by tomorrow it will get above freezing.

The truth is, we are not used to this type of weather in this part of the country. It’s no big deal for people who live in regions and go through it every winter.

I guess it is difficult to prepare for things that you think will never happen.
Jackie, move a little south to Spring. We have not lost power in my area. We had a standby generator installed 18 months ago and luckily have not needed it (so far). I've lived in north Houston 40 years and in my memory have never seen it this cold for this long. I'm looking for a hut down on the equator.

It cost 16K for the generator and I had a 500 gallon propane tank installed in 2017. Despite also installing a gas range I have not yet used enough propane (generator runs 20 minutes a week) to refill. Propane company is not happy.

Jackie,
We've lived that way for extended periods but on purpose. I wore snowshoes and packed water 200 yards for four months until the creek thawed. Of course, we were fifty years younger! This has to be a real hardship for you folks. Here in southern British Columbia, we have less snow than you do (way less) and today, it's warmer. This is beyond weird. Best wishes. WH

I’ve been losing power about 3 times a day for about 2hrs at a time for the last 2 days.. I have friends that has been without power for 2days..
When this ends you Texans need to look into back up generators... Or a portable generator...
I checked the place I normally buy from and man they are sold out.. I would think about natural gas or propane.. But have plenty of propane or a dedicated tank...

This power situation is all thanks to the greentards. No new coal fired or natgas power plants.

Instead we get foreign made, government subsidized wind turbines. ERCOT just said over 50% of our wind turbines are non functional due to the cold!

We had an awful cold snap in 83, I believe 20 days never got above freezing, then in 89 we had another. Never lost power like this.

Its not the grid, it's the lack of generation!

This is third world bs!

Just had a pipe burst in the ceiling, I ain't real happy with greentards right at the moment!

Hang tough out there, Nebraska Public Power just announced programmed blackouts (only 30 minutes) presumably to send power south. Drove home from work this morning it was -26 F, power in my area went off at 7 am, but was back on by 8 am. Duck and chicken waters were heavily iced up. Definitely looking to install wood stove in the basement this year.

The Panhandle of Texas isn't part of the ERCOT grid. So far, aside from some rolling blackouts for a hour or so, Excell Energy has kept the lights on. Wind turbines.... I hate the damn things. Everywhere you look here they pollute the landscape. We use to have the best sunsets in the world. Now we have sunsets with big ass egg beaters in the way. Oh, the best part, all the power generated here goes straight to the ERCOT grid. We don't get any of it. But hey, our coal and natural gas generation stations have been on line and cranking out power. Green new deal my ass.
