Texas approves hunting with sound suppressors

P1ZombieKiller

Last night the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept unanimously approved the use of sound suppressors for hunting game. They have not said when it when go into effect, but at least they have approved it.

Could someone here tell me some reasons that hunting with a suppressor is advantageous...other than hunting at night and on property you're not supposed to be hunting on.

Saving your hearing, not scaring other game that may be present and reducing any noise problems for residents in the vicinity. A question for you: Why would you care?

First off.... I assume you have never shoot with a supressor, or you would know. The noise reduction alone is a great relief. It's not like the movies, and all you hear is a "poof". Specially when you are shooting full supersonic rounds. But it does cut back the muzzle blast significantly. This makes it more enjoyable when you shoot. Factor in (at least in Texas) you are in a box blind and the sounds just echos in there.

2nd, I have a 9 yr old son that only weight 50 pounds. He is terrified of the 243 that all his brothers use for hunting. He won't even try to shoot it. He loves shooting the 10/22 that I cut down for him. His arms are so short, that he places the stock under arm (kinda like the armpit) and shoots it like that. With my 300/221 shooting subsonic, he can shoot it like a "big kid". This round will still have enough knock down to actually take a deer. This year will be his first year to deer hunt.

With the suppressor, we can shoot it with out ear protection. this makes it more fun to shoot too.

as far as the last part of your question

It's the same answer I tell all my friends at work. Bad guys will ALWAYS have guns. That's why they are the bad guys. The laws will not stop them. Thats why they are bad guys. If a person is going to tresspass and hunt or shoot at night, this is not going to help or hurt them. They will still do it.

uh.......the noise. sorry, the smart arse sneaks out every once i awhile. I live in the wonderful state of CA. >:( I would love to see a bill introduced to allow suppressors here but seriously doubt it will happen & if it did i really doubt it would ever pass. The main application for me would be for shooting squeaks where you are often in close proximity to residences, with permission. The continuous noise becomes offensive.I think everybody including the shooter could appreciate the noise reduction but i suppose if i had one i would automatically cause me to become a criminal & go on a killing spree.oooops, there i go again.

sleepygator, Didn't say that I cared...I just asked a question.

P1, One shouldn't assume, you know what that does! Once again, just asked a question. I didn't make any statement about you or anyone else being a bad guy.

Lucky, obviously, your State thinks anyone with a gun is a potential criminal, suppressor or not.

I would say that someone reading a question phrased as yours was would reasonably conclude predisposition. Judging by the several responses, I am not alone in that conclusion. [br]
As is Lucky; I, too am a California resident. Although our state makes it difficult for us, I still manage to shoot a few matches and get to the range occasionally. It may seem intolerable from afar but there are advantages in every location. Like, shooting January Camp Pendleton matches in 65°, sunny weather. :)

Here is another plus for me. This year I have decided to make me a huge bow hunting box. I built a box 7x7x7 about 4' off the ground. The window is 5' x 30" so there is plenty area to see. This box is big enough that me and my youngest son will now be able to sit inside in the dark, and he can shoot off a small bench with the subsonic round and a supressor, and the sound will not kill us. It will also give him a chance to see deer up very close and get that expierence that most kids can't sit still for.

That is great news P1! I found out last year that we can use them here in NE to hunt anything you can hunt with a rifle...guess what is on the way now?...no, don't guess...LOL!

Can't wait to use them myself for the same reasons many above listed, noise control for my hearing, noise control for the locals, noise control for my kid that likes to go to the woods with me, noise control to keep from scaring more game...did I mention noise control...oh ya...sorry to be redundant. ;-)

Joe, you guys have it made out there with your night vision on predators but now suppressors too? Didn't know that one.

There's an advantage that no-one's mentioned yet- you often get a second shot at game if the first shot happens to miss, esp at longer range. The sonic crack of the round passing by is the only thing they hear beyond the bullet striking behind them.

A friend who shoots -lots- of deer has had quite a few animals run towards him after a miss. Clearly they are oblivious to the direction of the muffled report.

it keeps joe pulic happy for one, here in the uk when got the use of sound mods after some sued the govermet for hearing loss as they had refused him one!
but in the uk we do lot of varminr control in towns and city's , and the police like use to use sound mod so the public is not alarmed ,

the main advantage is there is no muzzel that cut reciol like a sound mod, other are that the game may not alway run after the first shot or some times more

Heck, I didn't know we could use NVG's! Why'd ya have to tell me that!? Now they have to go on the list! LOL! Yes, I just found out about the suppressor thing last year while researching the topic. Mentioned to a buddy of mine that we could use them on anything you can hunt with a rifle and he didn't believe me. Next time he was up at the Game and Parks office he asked them and the guy said yes...I was thrilled!

Also, I found out that west of Hwy 81 here in NE you can hunt rabbits year round day or night, specifically cottentails! Trying to plan some shooting excursions out there for later this year.
