Range 200 yd
Conditions were terrible. 52°/28.6 Barometer/91% relative humidity/1182' density altitude at 500' elevation.
Rain rain rain all afternoon winds switching 3 to 10 mph nothing consistent.
I set up my old pact chronograph 24" from muzzle. It has infrared sensors allowing it to function under a canopy.
27" Button rifled 5 groove barrel. Large bore diameter, a .2372 pilot bushing will go into it with slight resistance.
6mm Dasher 271 nk 135 free bore/ Berger 105 VLD at lands/ cci 450 primers/Lapua old cardboard box brass. Empty primed case weight 128.69 case full H2O 170.38
Control lot 32.5 gr. Reloder 15 lot 95027 at 2896fps averaged 3 shots
IMR 4166 as follows
30 gr 2738fps 3.6 es (es=extreme spread) .255 group (measured center center)
30.5 gr 2789fps 15.9 es (.722)
31gr 2829fps 9.7es (.696)
31.5gr 2868fps 12.9es (.558)
32gr 2923fps 20.6es (.391)
32.5gr 2956fps 7.4es (.704)
33gr 3001fps 6.5es (1.380" got blown away.)
33.5gr 3055fps 3.4es (.672)
34gr compressed 3082fps 6.9es (.593)
It's a over bore barrel and the brass is hardened by over 20 firings, I didn't have any signs of high pressure on the primers not even at 34 grains.

Re: Tested IMR4166 in Dasher Today

That would put it's burn rate somewhere around VVN540 and IMR 4007.... That is an excellent range to be in... I might give it a try sometime.. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Tested IMR4166 in Dasher Today

I want to shoot more today so maybe I can report some better groupies and post some pictures of a good target or 2. I had the info in front of me last night and figured somebody out there might benefit from the velocity report so I posted it.

Jay, Thanks, the 33.0-33.5 area is where i would like to see. I am in no rush to get rid of RL-15 ………. lol…. jim

I have a few lbs of this powder I'm gonna run some tests on as well. If weather holds up I'll try and get this done Saturday morning. Thanks for your results that gives me a starting point on where to start my powder charges.

Oh man am I interested. New barrel is in for my Dasher. Old one had problems with carbon fouling and Varget. Soon as I fireform another 160 cases I loaded yesterday the old barrel will come off.

Now I wonder what availability there is on that IMR powder?

31°/69.6% RH/29.5 BP
32gr. 2907fps/5.1es
32.5gr 2953fps/11.5es
33gr. 2986fps/25.7es (?)
33.2gr 3015fps/7.7es
33.5gr 3036fps/4.4es
34gr. 3089fps/9.2es
I fired a few 103gr Vapor Trail bullets at 34gr for 3100fps into a .206 group and 34.2 gr into a .213 for 3 shots. No data on that one.
32gr w/108 Bergers I shot .317" for 5 shots I'll have to update this post later with more groups and velocities, I have some places to be today and need to get moving.

I want to thank Jay for giving a little data to start with the 6 dasher I have been playing with a 20 dasher with the 4166 the powder charge is with in a tenth of varget I shot a 4 shot group Monday this week at 350 yds. in fairly high pushes in wind just at .995 with a custom 53 gr. bullet my boss makes he loves playing with the 20 cal. velocity was 3750fps good job Jay for giving us something to work with I will be testing the 4451 in my 6.5 jcst this weekend.

I've never been a Varget shooter, always preferred re15, it's cleaner than re15. After 42shots I had enough powder residue inside the brake to have to wipe on the muzzle a little while with a patch soaked in Bore tech. It wiped clean but so would Varget residue.
The barrel cleaned up easy with bore tech and bronze brush followed by a quick rub with jb and kroil, that is my normal cleaning procedure.
I looked in the bore and it was so clean it looked like that new IMR powder burned last years moly out of it. :o

I've stopped testing it for now. I have to put on a better shooting barrel and get some better weather before I burn anymore powder.
