I do it the way shortgrass recommmended in post 2. it is the best way to get the best fit.

I think measure the pitch diameter and put it on my serialized sketch for that receiver.

If the barrel I'm replacing fits well, I can just duplicate it by matching the major diameter and measuring across in a groove with a dial caliper to get a thread dimension to which I can cut. The measurement is meaningless in most respects but works fine for comparative purposes. For true PD I use three wires. WH
