Tenion Length

What should the tenion length be on a 3l bat, and tenion dia. I was told by a gunsmith that the tenion should be .002 under 1.062.

Sounds like he is talking about tenon diameter. The proper spec would be 1.0625 which is 1 1/16th. There's nothing wrong with turning it down to 1.060" though.

To determine the proper tenon length you'll need to measure down to the forward face of the bolt lug and subtract 0.008".

Everything is based on the action dimensions. No set dimension will work for any gun. Measuring the action and setting chamber depth on the barrel is what makes it go bang in perfect order.

DocEd and Butch you guys quit 'hatein' on those in the know!!!!!!!! "can't we all just get along?"......just love quoteing that shallow, worthless, hug everybody sayin :)

While some actions are manufactured consistent enough for a "measurement" to work, most are not. It's a good practice to check and confirm the action measurements.
