Tempilaq for annealing ?

When using "Tempilaq" for annealing, do you still place the cases in about 1" of water ,then tip over when the inside of the neck painted with "Tempilaq" changes color ?

I use a 650F stik and set my torch heat, then simply count seconds until the stick draws a line on the brass. I use my cordless drill with a deep 1/2" socket to rotate the casing in the heat usually about 4- 5 seconds, then dump the casing into a bucket of water to cool. Works slick.

It's brass, not steel. No need for water. Just adds another step (drying).

There are case hardening compounds/powders that comes in a can. (Brownells 083-000-033WB
Surface Hardening Compound ). If a powder, wet the steel and coat with compound. Heat the steel to recrystallization temp. (1550 F.) and quench. Repeat. Works very well. I believe the Brownells product is more of a paste, so the object does not need to be wet before application. I have also seen a case hardening product wherein the heated object is placed into the powder and allowed to cool.

It's my understanding that one paints the inside of the case mouth/neck with the 650 * Tempilaq, apply heat,making sure not to direct any flame to the inside of the case mouth/neck, just the outside. When the Tempilaq changes color the brass has reached 650 *.
A friend made me a copy of the Woodchuck den's annealing tool "ring of fire". Thoufht Id give it a try

I bought one of those, and it was God awful - it wound up in the trash.

Use hex sockets and a cordless screw driver, and you can't go wrong.

There is two different styles a paint on and a marker, my stick marker won't draw a line until the brass gets heated to the proper predetermined 650F termp. So I generally count about 4 seconds then swipe the neck, if I see a visable yellow line i'm done.

to the OP I use the yellow templaq 650 degree.. I use a q-tip and put a line on the brass.. then put in on my cordless drill and turn on the torch... spin it around till the templaq changes then drop the brass in distilled water. (distilled water doesnt leave water spots) then I put them in a rack to dry by the 100 and use my heat gun to just blow warm air over the brass to speed up the drying, but I dont put the heat too close to the brass where it heats the brass up too too much. after most is ll dry on the outside and fairly dry in the inside I set the rack of brass in a dehumidifier overnight.... next day or next chance I get I continue with reloading.

No.
350 0n inside neck and 650 1" down from shoulder.
I have used a Bench Source Vertex for many years to do 6mm to 50 BMGs. It will automaticly anneal 100 6mm cases in 6 minutes, perfectly. All you have to do is set them on.
Don't forget to clean them first.

The tempilaq is key to learning the correct temperature. Easy to over heat short cases without it. I use it to learn the correct amount of time to heat the case so I don't ruin cases. Water is not needed adds extra step.
