Tech School milling machine project ideas

Action wrenches for M700, Mausers (common bottom, different top for small and large ring), barrel vise and aluminum bushings, fixtures for anything else or any other receivers he thinks will be common and economic.

The local (former) community college used to have courses where the teacher taught you to make you own hammer, 1-2-3 blocks, tapping block, V-blocks, and even a vise. You cut, machine, send out for heat treatment and grind it yourself to finish. In other words, make your own common machine tools used on a mill. How precise you wish them to be is up to you.

It,s a precision machining course from the post
I don,t see where it said precision Milling Machine course.
I more then likely covers many aspects of many machine,s How about an EDM Machine ALSO?

Gerry, Gerry, Kid, can't you read 6.5creed's thread asking for milling machine project? It didn't ask about splitting the atom.

Looking back and considering how much I learned doing my apprenticeship, compared to what there was to learn, wire or ram EDM, die making is far beyond the scope of that 2 year class.
Mill project? Conventional, climb, allowing for the 'lash. As has been so wisely suggested, a smallish toolmaker's vise would be a great project that would be used the rest of his life. If he really wanted to Gussy it up, design removable jaws, reamed, doweled, jacking screws, longitudinal V groove, vertical V groove, stepped. Leaving the right amount of grind stock, choosing his metal based on heat treat characteristics. A reasonably comprehensive elementary intro to design criteria and machining principles imo.
Then when he gets to grinding projects, he will continue with this project and learn the difference between parallel and flat and abt relieving the wheel to prevent burning - among many other principles.
I would think there are many designs available on the 'net. Mix, match - do his own thing after consulting with the Instructor of course.

Here some other easy beginner projects. Copies I made of the Davidson bullet puller is all mill work. The firing pin tool has a few milled parts. The spring change tool is all mill work. And.....check out that little hammer I made in 10th grade in '68. Still gets banged all the time. Haven't run a machine tool in 3.5 years after retiring from being a machinist for 42 years. I have just recently been in the need of a, "broken case extractor." The whole head blew off inside the chamber. Case stuck.
Had a couple of ideas,.
An insert with teeth, that expands to grab the brass from the receiver end.
A small hardened hook? that inserts and hooks on the mouth of the case.
Both, thread onto a cleaning rod.

I keep this in my range box for removing broken cases. It is just a variation of an ages old extractor design. You can make it from brass rod at home. Spin it in a drill motor, form it with a file and split it with a hacksaw. Done in minutes. Insert the tool into the breech end until it snaps over the case mouth. Tap the tool with a cleaning rod from the muzzle end, out it comes. Works great.

A true bolt action AR upper is something I would like to see someone build. Not a side charge upper.

Would be nice to build budget precision rifles with all the use of common ar components. No gas system just a plain old bolt.
